The Legacy of ETHIndia: Stories of yesterday, today and tomorrow

As we gear up for ETHIndia 2022 in collaboration with ETHGlobal, we wanted to take a trip down memory lane to reminisce the legacy that we've built so far.

The Legacy of ETHIndia: Stories of yesterday, today and tomorrow

At the heart of Ethereum is a community of individuals driven by curiosity and excitement to build for a better tomorrow. And as we stand on the cusp of the most significant leap since the internet, we want to take you back to when our tryst with Ethereum started. A medium that has allowed our generation to reimagine the future as we know it.

Very few events in the past have left such an indelible mark on the Indian Web3 community as ETHIndia. From its humble beginnings with just 200 developers attending the hackathon, it has now grown into a movement that has planted the seeds of Web3 and put India on the map for global recognition.

The hackathon has been pivotal in evangelising Ethereum and Web3 to developers in India and abroad. The success of previous ETHIndia hackathons has been unprecedented — not just in terms of the number of participants or projects but also in laying a solid foundation for how the ecosystem will evolve in the following years!

As we prepare for our next edition, we wanted to take a trip down memory lane and revisit the history that we’ve made, the projects shipped, and the strong friendships forged through it all.

To new beginnings 🥂

ETHIndia ‘18 led to the birth of the 🇮🇳 Web3 landscape as we know it today.

While still in its initial stages, it is here that teams like Polygon found their tribe! Polygon (then MATIC) founders Jayanti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal and Anurag Arjun came across many of their early team members, including Arpit and Siddharth. They formed the core of the Polygon team and created a significant impact in the years to come!

And, of course, we can't talk about ETHIndia without mentioning the fantastic brother duo Sowmay and Samyak Jain. Their project, Instadapp, is the world's most advanced platform for utilizing the full potential of decentralized finance, and it now has a TVL (total value locked) in the billions.

Instadapp @ ETHIndia’18:

InstaDapp - Using MakerDAO, Kyber Network & Embark framework | Devfolio
Resolver contract & Dapp on top of MakerDAO CDP for Loan, Trade / Swap ERC20 tokens against margin or collateral of ETH and repay Loan (Protocols used: MakerDAO CDP, Kyber Network)

Developers Journey: Onwards and Upwards

Developers are the backbone of Ethereum. They are the ones who build applications that help shape the world we live in today.

Over the years, the ETHIndia hackathons have allowed developers to unite, exchange ideas & knowledge and build a better future. While these hackathons take place over the course of three days, it’s a ride that lasts way beyond that. The experience gained by participants at ETHIndia has been life-changing for many, and their enthusiasm for building on Ethereum has only grown since then. But don’t just take our word for it!

Remarkable builders like Mudit, CISO @0xPolygon, Sarang, Core Developer @SushiSwap, Pranav, Blockchain Engineer @graphprotocol, Angela, Steward @KERNEL0x and dev @bonfire_tweets have participated in ETHIndia and taken their Ethereum journey to the next level!

Adding more to the list of notable builders, the legendary duo Anton and Sergej, who have previously built 1Lend at ETHIndia, have now gone on to co-found 1inch.

Voices of the community 🎙

Most importantly, ETHIndia hackathons have been pivotal in bringing together some of the brightest minds in the Web3 ecosystem to share their ideas and build something meaningful.

Thanks to these hackathons, we’ve hosted some of the true blue legends in the industry. In addition, we’ve had developers, designers, and entrepreneurs who shared their knowledge with us using their experience and expertise. They’ve been critical to our mission of adding tangible value to our event attendees, and we continue to bring in more such keynote speakers for future events.

Here are a few who were at the hackathons over the past few years. Evan Van Ness (Investor, Starbloom Ventures), Vignesh Sundaresan and Meta Kovan, Michael Egorov (Creator, Curve Finance), Vivek Singh (Co-founder, Gitcoin), Simona pop (Co-founder Bounties Network & MG steward Gitcoin), Vaibhav Chellani (Founder, Socket), Varun Deshpande (Co-founder, OnJunoHQ) and Helena (Co-founder ETHBerlin) and Stani Kulechov (Founder, AAVE & Lens Protocol).
