Navigation is an important part of our daily lives. However, most apps that use navigation focus on speed and rarely on safety. Apart from the time taken, we believe that users should see the safety ratings of routes before they decide which route to take.
We are university students from India and we have faced situations where we felt unsafe while traveling alone in a car or while walking in deserted stretches of road. For example, when we book a cab, google maps suggests the route that takes the least time. Often that route is the one which is isolated or is through remote areas. Many locals avoid these roads but non-localities do not know about it and are filled with apprehension and fear during their journey. Untoward incidents tend to happen in these situations. To prevent such incidents, we thought of an app which rates roads based on safety. The ratings will be generated from a combination of crime data and user feedback.
We ran into trouble with the here maps API initially as we were new to it. But the simplicity of it and the easy to understand code made it supereasy to integrate later on.
