Project SPARK - Introducing Gameification in Education!

The problem Spark solves

In today's education there is a gap between what even our best schools are teaching, and the must-have skills all students will need for careers, college and citizenship in the 21st century. Dr Tony Wagner, co-director of Harvard's Change Leadership Group has identified in his book what he calls a "global achievement gap,". We need to engage students in higher-order thinking skills in order for them to develop the skills that will be critical to their future success. We need to stop depending on the lower-level skills, such as memorization and recall, and help students develop higher-order thinking skills such as applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating.

Our Solution:
A gamified platform that helps students develop these skills in an interesting way to prepare them for their future. We test students to find out where they stand with the help of an aptitude test which has questions targeting these skills. The results of this test are analysed using ML/AI and each student is given a personalized learning schedule through games that targets the skills that requires improvement. Here’s a few examples of the skill development games we plan to create:

• Critical thinking, analyzing information and problem-solving
A story-based video game where the student is asked to make choices at different points of the game depending on which the story advances. At each step the student has the option to go back and choose another option again to experience the consequences of each selected decision. This helps them develop their critical thinking and decision-making skills.

• Effective oral communication
In this game the student gets to talk to an AI bot which helps them improve their oral communication skills without the fear of feeling embarrassed.

• Creativity and imagination
Students are given a platform where they can drag and drop different pictures, characters, dialogues, etc and showcase their imagination in a unique way.

Challenges I ran into

This was our first time using Unity for game development. It was extremely buggy! Also my fist time usng databases in webapps with SQLite.
