Phaunus

Phaunus

Our project idea is to use machine learning for audio classification and detect sounds of chainsaw, fire, weapons to recognise activities like illegal logging, poaching and forest fire.

The problem Phaunus solves

My idea will be addressing the key problems and effects of illegal logging, poaching and forest fire to environment and economy of the country. It solves environmental problems like global warming, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, etc. The sales of illegally wood like timber wood, decreases the value of timber in world by 7%-16%, depending on the product. This causes the US Trade Center to solely face a loss of US$460 Million every year. So this idea will also help to address this problem.
It provides a platform for forest rangers to keep track of forest activities effectively and helps forestry department with data for different research activities. Also, this project helps in to achieve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals 13 and 15 i.e. Climate action and Life on Land. Forest rangers can use this device to monitor various areas of forest effectively and stop illegal activites before they happen or cause any loss.

Challenges I ran into

The only problem that I ran into was time. Because of the busy schedules and attending the program online, I couldn't add much of the features as they were supposed to be. But I was successful to display the core idea with the help of available resources. Also, walking solely was a bad idea, so this is also something I learnt that having a team is always a plus point. This helped me to figure out my true potential of how do I work in time limited projects.
