An interactive glove,which can be worn by speech impaired(dumb) ,that aims to convert basic symbols in Sign Language that represent the 26 English letters into text and display them on a smartphone.
The problem Interactive Gloves- An aid for Speech Impaired solves
"Interactive Gloves" is basically an aid for the speech impaired. The sole purpose is to help the speech impaired community to easily communicate and interact with their nearby surrounding. It may also help to generate employment for them,if integrated with various services. The gloves can even be customized to display certain sentences,which the speech impaired use frequently with a much simpler gesture. For example- "My name is bla-bla" - can be displayed by some single ,easier gesture,as desired by the person. This will help their conversation to be effective.
In a crisp, common people , who are probably unaware of the sign language,would just have to connect their smartphones to the gloves via Bluetooth and read the symbols using BT apps.
This project can also be considered as a basis/ground work for tasks like controlling robotic arm with the help of hand movements. Geared with controller,it can provide amazing facilities like home automation on tips.
Challenges we ran into
Representing the first few symbols was quite easy and fun,but there were few symbols that were hard to distinguish .Thus,they gave almost the same value. Also,as the flex sensors used are very sensitive,it caused some unnecessary bending,causing errors in the values. We got over these problems by taking multiple test values,and thus arriving at an average range.
