The problem ZeroWaste Nexus solves

Food waste is a significant global issue, contributing to environmental degradation and resource loss. Many households, restaurants, and businesses struggle to manage surplus food efficiently, leading to unnecessary waste. Additionally, composting efforts often go unrecognized, reducing incentives for eco-friendly behavior.

ZeroWaste Nexus addresses these challenges by offering:

✅ Smart Food Tracking:

Uses AI to predict food spoilage based on purchase patterns, storage conditions, and expiry dates.
Provides timely reminders and consumption suggestions to reduce waste.
✅ Food Redistribution System:

Identifies surplus food in households, restaurants, or grocery stores.
Connects donors with NGOs, shelters, and food banks, ensuring edible food reaches those in need.
✅ Composting Rewards:

Encourages sustainable practices by rewarding users for composting food waste.
Users can earn points, discounts, or social recognition, promoting eco-friendly behavior.
By combining AI insights, smart storage tracking, and community engagement, ZeroWaste Nexus empowers individuals and organizations to reduce food waste, improve resource distribution, and contribute to environmental sustainability.

Challenges we ran into

During the development of ZeroWaste Nexus, we encountered several challenges that required creative problem-solving and teamwork. Key challenges included:

🚧 Data Integration and Cleaning
Issue: Integrating data from diverse sources such as POS systems, IoT sensors, and manual food inventory logs led to inconsistencies in formats, units, and structures.
Solution: We implemented robust data cleaning pipelines using Pandas to standardize data formats and ensure consistency. Additionally, we used PostgreSQL for structured data management, improving query efficiency.
⚙️ AI Model Optimization
Issue: Training the AI model to accurately predict food spoilage while accounting for variables like temperature, humidity, and expiration dates was complex.
Solution: We fine-tuned our model using hyperparameter optimization techniques and improved its accuracy by incorporating additional features such as storage conditions and usage frequency.
🌐 Real-time Tracking and Cloud Integration
Issue: Ensuring seamless real-time updates between devices and the cloud required efficient data flow management.
Solution: We utilized Firebase for real-time synchronization and Node.js to create efficient backend APIs that minimized latency.
🏆 Composting Rewards System Logic
Issue: Designing a fair yet engaging reward system that motivates users to compost regularly was challenging.
Solution: We implemented a point-based system with achievable milestones, making composting more rewarding and encouraging consistent user engagement.
Through teamwork, research, and continuous testing, we successfully overcame these challenges, ensuring ZeroWaste Nexus is robust, efficient, and impactful.
