The problem zero solves

ZERO is serves as the next-generation decentralized car auction platform built on blockchain and zero knowledge. By incorporating zero knowledge proofs (risc-zero zkVM), the platform ensures execution across off chain and on-chain systems.
Representing Real World Assets on-chain is a problem yet to be solved and ZERO provides a way to verify and represent assets on-chain by proving off chain executions like proof of state.
The main problem we are trying to solve is ensuring security and trust on off-chain systems leading to a trusted execution done on-chain.

The system is composed of multiple core components, each playing a critical role in making the platform both efficient and secure. These components include a zero-knowledge virtual machine (zkVM), a robust database layer (representing an off-chain system), smart contract (for proof verification and asset minting) and a frontend architecture designed to provide a seamless user experience.

Key components
One of the key innovations of ZERO is the integration of ZK and CCIP for proof generation and sync across multiple chains.
This process starts by the zkVM perfoming the cryptographic operations behind the scenes, and on-chain verification ensures that participants can trust the data presented in real time. This provides a layer of security and transparency, offering proof of authenticity without revealing the underlying sensitive information.

ZERO places a strong emphasis on both security and privacy. All car data is hashed, ensuring that sentive information remains protected while still maintaining assets integrity.
The use of Merkle tree-based proofs guarantees that no data can be tampered with without detection. This validation layer is done both ways (on-chain & off-chain). The validation layer not only protects the integrity of cars but also ensures that the auction process is transparent, traceable and secure.

In addition, the use of Zero Knowledge proofs allows for verification of execution like buy, sell, bid on off-chain systems while ensuring only relevant data is exposed to the public.

Challenges we ran into

Some of the challenges we faced when building ZERO is State verification where off-chain database state will be checked and verified that it is in sync with the off-chain proof representation. We came up with a solution that helps check database state using zkVM to proof the execution of the check and return the verification status. That solution is helps everyone using our system to manually verify state.
Leading from that issue, we encountered an issue where the cross chain applications and nft has to sync the system chain in order to prevent replay attacks.
The use of CCIP and chainlink function helped us not only sync the state but make our contract access the off-chain state using custom api endpoint which runs the state check zkVM and returns the ipfs hash of the data.
