Social Good / Llama Impact Hack, powered by Meta
Public Service: An AI powered system for reducing the rate of crimes against women.
The problem WOLYF solves
Our App WOLYF addresses the critical need for immediate, accessible support for women across India who face daily threats to their safety, both in public and private spaces. Here’s how it directly tackles these challenges while promoting inclusivity:
- Real-Time Emergency Response:
- In cases of distress or potential danger, the app provides an instant SOS feature that allows women to alert trusted contacts, authorities, or nearby support networks with just a tap, ensuring timely assistance in emergencies.
- Speech Recognition with Regional Language Support:
- Powered by Llama AI’s advanced speech recognition capabilities, the app recognizes distress triggers in multiple Indian languages, allowing users from all linguistic backgrounds to access help without language barriers.
- This inclusivity is essential in India’s diverse linguistic landscape, where millions of women might feel hesitant using English-only apps.
- Multi-Language Interface:
- The app is designed with a simple, multilingual interface, supporting Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and more. This inclusivity ensures women from all regions and backgrounds feel represented and supported, and that language does not stand in the way of safety.
- Accessible for All Socioeconomic Backgrounds:
- The app is free and open-source, making it accessible to women across all economic backgrounds. Women who may not afford premium safety tools now have access to high-quality safety measures without financial constraints.
- Privacy and Community Support:
- As an open-source solution, the app is transparent, with its code accessible to the public. This transparency builds trust and ensures continuous improvements based on community feedback, making it an evolving tool for safety that women can rely on.
- User-Friendly Design:
- The app is easy to use thus, empowering women of all ages, literacy levels, and tech proficiency to access safety features effortlessly
Challenges we ran into
For our hackathon project focused on women’s safety, we encountered several challenges:
-
Selecting the Right Development Platform:
- Challenge: Finding a platform that balanced accessibility, performance, and support for multiple devices was crucial. We needed a solution that would allow for a simple UI while supporting the complex functionalities we envisioned.
- Solution: After exploring various options, we chose React Native for its cross-platform compatibility and efficient development process. This choice allowed us to create a seamless experience for users on both Android and iOS, maximizing accessibility.
-
Building the Voice Recognition Model:
- Challenge: Developing a speech recognition model capable of understanding distress cues and multiple regional languages was no small feat. We wanted the app to be responsive and inclusive of diverse linguistic needs.
- Solution: Leveraging Meta's Llama AI, we designed a custom voice recognition model tailored to the Indian linguistic landscape, allowing for real-time detection of distress in various languages. Training and testing the model to ensure accuracy and timely response were intensive but ultimately rewarding.
-
Ensuring Inclusivity Across Language Barriers:
- Challenge: Providing multilingual support while maintaining a clean and user-friendly interface posed a significant UI/UX challenge.
- Solution: We adopted a simple, icon-based navigation style with easy language toggling, ensuring users of any literacy level could navigate the app comfortably. This design ensures that language is no barrier to accessibility, no matter the user’s background.
-
Open-Source Integrity and Security:
- Challenge: Making an open-source app that remains secure and trustworthy was essential, as user safety and privacy are top priorities.
- Solution: We implemented a transparent, modular code structure, allowing for contributions.
