The problem WhatsApp based home automation solves

Home automation systems are often expensive or require specialized apps. This project offers a low-cost and user-friendly alternative by enabling WhatsApp-based control of appliances.

Users can turn ON/OFF lights, fans, and other devices remotely with just a WhatsApp message.

Provides universal accessibility (since almost everyone uses WhatsApp).

Enhances safety and convenience — appliances can be controlled without direct physical access.

Can be extended to include sensors (temperature, motion, gas leak) for smarter monitoring.

Challenges we ran into

WhatsApp API Setup: Setting up Twilio Sandbox for WhatsApp and linking it with Raspberry Pi was tricky.
Solution: Carefully followed API documentation, generated access tokens, and tested with trial numbers before scaling.

GPIO Control Conflicts: Initial wiring with LEDs and motor driver caused misbehavior (random ON/OFF).
Solution: Used proper resistors, corrected GPIO pin mapping, and tested each component individually before combining.

Network Latency: WhatsApp messages sometimes took 2–3 seconds to reflect.
Solution: Optimized code to handle incoming messages asynchronously and improved Wi-Fi connectivity.
