Decentralized Radio Station
The problem web3radio solves
Web3radio functions like a conventional online radio for listeners, but leverages blockchain to provide control, accountability, and fairness for broadcasters.
- Open Listening Experience: Anyone can tune in and enjoy the stream, just like traditional online radio.
- Controlled Broadcasting: Only NFT holders can access the dashboard to broadcast, ensuring contributors have rightful control over their time slots.
- Delegation & Scheduling: ERC-4907 allows broadcasters to rent or delegate their slots, making scheduling transparent and fair.
- Direct Compensation: Tips and rewards go directly to the active holder of a slot, creating fair incentives for contributors.
- On-Chain Transparency: All access rights, delegations, and claims are recorded on the blockchain, improving trust and accountability compared to centralized radio setups.
In essence, Web3radio keeps the familiar radio experience for listeners, while upgrading contributor governance and fairness through blockchain.
Challenges I ran into
Integrating NFT Access with Broadcasting Dashboard
- Challenge: Ensuring that only NFT holders could access the dashboard, while listeners remained unrestricted.
- Solution: Implemented ERC-4907 “user delegation” so NFTs could be rented or delegated for specific time slots, ensuring proper access control without disrupting listeners.
Time-Based Slot Management
- Challenge: Managing hourly and daily slots for Regular and Super Access NFTs, and preventing double-booking or conflicts.
- Solution: Designed on-chain slot tracking with week-based indexing, allowing effective holders to claim and use slots transparently.
Ensuring Fair Tip Distribution
- Challenge: Tips needed to go to the correct contributor in real-time, especially when slots were delegated.
- Solution: Integrated tips with the effective holder of each NFT, so delegated users automatically received the funds.
Balancing Decentralization and Usability
- Challenge: Full decentralization could reduce usability or introduce complexity for scheduling and tip handling.
- Solution: Adopted a hybrid approach: listeners enjoy open streaming like conventional radio, while NFT-based governance, delegation, and tip systems remain decentralized and transparent.
The hardest part was translating blockchain concepts into a smooth, fair, and usable broadcasting experience.
