Virtual Eye

Blindness is an unfortunate handicap but true vision does not require eyes but "Virtual Eye".

The problem Virtual Eye solves

An app that addresses the issues faced by the visually challenged in reading documents, business cards, chats, doctors prescriptions, etc. Virtual Eye provides 3 main features -

  1. Recognizes text and converts in form of speech (default in English)
  2. Personality of the person who wrote the document can be predicted based on our trained model.
  3. Multi language approach -> for now we have only used English, Hindi and Marathi but in future can be used with variety of rural as well as foreign languages.

Users can avail these features by giving just the voice commands also if not using buttons.

Challenges we ran into

The major challenge faced while creating this solution was that we had a basic idea but no solid idea about what exact issue the visually impaired face and how they would be comfortable with the solution we thought of. So to figure that out we started building the app by talking to a few visually impaired people we knew of that really helped us get clarity on what we need to do and how.
Apart from that, we faced a number of other technical problems while building it -

  1. SocketException while trying to send data caused due to firewall. We solved it by using ngrok tool.
  2. Returning parameters from a called func on pressing a button and using it in another function.
  3. Insecurehttp, bad http are some of the errors we faced while establishing connection between client and server.
  4. Dealing with Future variables and functions.
