Because Ignoring Hazards Is Not an Option.
The problem UrbanShield solves
UrbanShield addresses a critical gap in civic engagement by empowering citizens to report local hazards—such as potholes, broken streetlights, waterlogging, and waste mismanagement—directly from their smartphones. Traditionally, these issues are either underreported or lost in bureaucratic loops due to lack of a centralized, user-friendly reporting mechanism.
Our platform simplifies this process by:
- Providing a seamless and intuitive interface for real-time issue reporting through images and location tagging.
- Connecting citizens directly with municipal authorities for faster action.
- Offering transparency through status tracking, ensuring accountability from local bodies.
- Creating a digital feedback loop where unresolved or ignored issues are escalated via community upvotes and media visibility.
By bridging the gap between citizens and urban authorities, UrbanShield fosters cleaner, safer, and more responsive cities through technology-driven civic participation.
Challenges we ran into
Ensuring Transparency:
We had to ideate and implement a system that builds user trust through transparent issue tracking and resolution updates.
Filtering Genuine Reports:
It was challenging to ensure only valid hazards were reported, while also preventing duplicate submissions for the same issue.
Mapping & Real-Time Notifications:
Adding geolocation features and notifying nearby users took significant time from ideation to actual implementation.
Maintaining UI Consistency:
Preserving smooth animations across various screen sizes required multiple responsive design iterations and testing.
Balancing Admin & User Roles:
We had to carefully design admin permissions while retaining user autonomy to report, track, and escalate issues.
Time Management:
Under hackathon pressure, we focused on delivering key features efficiently while coordinating tasks within the team.
