Blockchain x AI for Trustless Carbon Credits

The problem Trustless RWA Tokenisation solves

Carbon credit markets suffer from a lack of transparency, trust, and accessibility. Buyers often face risk of double-counting and unverifiable claims.
Our project solves this by creating a trustless carbon credit issuance platform for the trustless issuance of on-chain real-world assets (RWAs), powered by Chainlink Functions and Space and Time (SxT).
Users seeking to offset carbon credits can:

  • Buy tokenized carbon credits backed by verified off-chain data from SxT
  • Burn tokens to offset emissions and receive certificates
  • Explore carbon credit metadata and project provenance for full transparency

Safe, Verified and Transparent On-Chain:
How it works:

  • Automates the verify → mint/burn pipeline using Chainlink Functions and SxT
  • Ensures credits are only minted or burned after trusted off-chain verification
  • Provides on-chain auditability and traceability for ESG compliance
  • Creates a data-to-value flow, turning real-world impact into on-chain financial instruments

Challenges we ran into

Our team has encountered several technical and conceptual hurdles during development. Understanding how Chainlink Functions and SxT integrate was a steep learning curve.

Smart Contract Bugs

  • Challenge: Role assignment issues in OpenZeppelin upgradeable contracts post-deployment.
Solution: Debugged locally using Anvil (Foundry) to fix permission logic.
  • Challenge: Callback failures in Chainlink Functions.
Solution: Simplified the request structure for reliable execution.

Integration Hurdles

  • Challenge: No direct Chainlink Functions for contract testing in Anvil.
Solution: Simulated off-chain flows first before full on-chain testing.
  • Challenge: SxT free-tier query limitations.
Solution: Optimized backend logic to minimise api calls.
  • Challenge: PostgreSQL and SxT data type mismatches & ABI encoding/decoding complexities.
Solution: Referenced Chainlink & SxT docs to ensure correct data formatting.

Testing Strategy

  • Unit-tested contracts with Anvil.
  • Deployed to Sepolia for end-to-end validation.
  • Studied Chainlink/SxT templates for security and data handling best practices.
