One of the biggest challenges we faced while building TransCrypt was enabling truly offline payments in a secure and verifiable manner. Traditional blockchain systems rely on constant connectivity for consensus, so creating a reliable handshake mechanism between two offline devices was a major hurdle. Ensuring that both sender and receiver could validate a transaction, store it locally, and then sync it without data loss or duplication once reconnected required designing a custom offline transaction protocol. We had to simulate trust and temporary consensus without a live blockchain, which involved careful handling of timestamps, digital signatures, and local verification rules to ensure the integrity of each transaction.

Beyond the handshake logic, syncing the offline data back to the blockchain without creating inconsistencies was extremely challenging. We encountered issues like double-spending, conflicting transaction states, and verification delays when multiple users attempted to sync simultaneously. Managing these while keeping the app lightweight and responsive forced us to rethink how blockchain logic could be modularized for offline-first use. Designing a flow that felt seamless to users but robust under the hood took multiple iterations. The process taught us how crucial it is to balance decentralization principles with real-world usability—especially when working with limited connectivity and high security expectations.
