Top Roach: A Telegram-Based PvP Game on the Base Blockchain. Battle, Evolve, and Dominate to become TOP ROACH.
The problem Top Roach solves
-
Poor On-Chain Gaming UX [submit tx, wait, submit tx...]
Solution: Greatly improved UX through the use of a custom-built account abstraction system. Deposit once and play through the Telegram bot. Game executors take your game requests and execute them on-chain for you. Top Roach supports parallel execution, leading to zero wait times between game actions/transactions. -
Difficulty Introducing Friends to the Game [each person has to go through the process of creating their own account]
Solution: The Roach Manager contract has built-in functionality that allows you to create accounts for your (non-crypto) friends so they can easily play Top Roach; the only information needed is your friend's Telegram hash and wallet address. -
Lack of In-Depth PvP On-Chain Games
Solution: Top Roach is a PvPvE game where you can battle against players or monsters for rewards. There is a battle system and leaderboard. The game features a trait system and item boosters which can greatly influence your game strategy. An achievement system is also included. -
Unfair Game Rewards Distribution System
Solution: Some of Top Roach's features cost ROACH. All spent ROACH in-game accumulates as a round-end reward. At the end of each round, the gathered amount is distributed among Top Roaches based on evolution level and prestige (battle points). This logic is enforced within the game contract. -
A Limited Number of Fully On-Chain Games
Solution: All game data and logic are stored and executed on the Base blockchain. Each game action comes with a corresponding transaction hash as a reply upon execution.
Challenges I ran into
There were several challenges that I faced. Implementing an error-prone parallel execution system was difficult. Another challenge was perfecting the quality of life for players without having users test the game. The last difficulty was balancing game components to ensure none were overpowered.
To address these challenges, I relied on a trial and error process fueled by caffeine. I refactored the code to enable the game infrastructure to handle a list of executors instead of just one. To gather better user feedback, I set up a demo on Sepolia for friends to test. I also enhanced player quality of life by incorporating visual elements in addition to text and providing transaction hash links for every in-game action settled on the Base chain. Conducting trial rounds with close friends provided insights into which parts of the game were over or under-tuned and led to ideas for new mechanics like traits or supply hunts.
