Terms of Service (TOS) Translator
A tool that summarizes and clarifies sections of a Terms and Services (Terms and Conditions) contract.
The problem Terms of Service (TOS) Translator solves
Everyone signs Terms or Services contracts almost daily without fully reading them. Whether for new subscriptions, apps, or websites, almost everything today requires a signed terms and services document for use. These documents are often long, extensive, and complicated, making the task of fully reading and understanding them daunting and outright unmanageable.
As such, companies potentially have the ability to abuse their users through these contracts, gaining access to the user's personal data and requesting permission to share the data without the user's knowledge, a huge ethical issue. With our tool, people are more inclined to look into what their contracts are actually saying through ease of access and readability. The hope is that users would therefore be more aware of what they are signing onto, allowing for more informed decision-making.
Challenges I ran into
One of our biggest challenges was configuring open-source large language models to perform our task correctly. We spent much time testing different models, parameters, quantities of input tokens, etc. Our primary issue boiled down to this: while testing different models, we were limited to only the free APIs that we had access to, so the size and quality of the LLMs we could use were restricted. Eventually, we managed to get to stable ground through lots of testing and troubleshooting, and we aim to keep experimenting with different methods in the future.
