From Small to SUI: Tokenizing real estate on the SUI blockchain, offering fractional ownership, liquidity, and security, making property investment accessible to all
The problem SUILAND & TWO SIDES OF UNFOLD(NON-TECH TRACK) solves
The "From Small to SUI" project revolutionizes real estate investment by leveraging blockchain technology, specifically the SUI blockchain, to tokenize properties and make ownership more accessible, flexible, and secure. Traditionally, real estate investment requires significant capital and often involves lengthy, complex transactions, making it difficult for young or small investors to participate. This project solves these challenges by allowing users to invest in real estate through fractional ownership, where properties are divided into semi-fungible tokens (SFTs), enabling people to purchase small shares of high-value properties.
How People Can Use It:
Fractional Ownership: Investors can buy a fraction of a real estate property by purchasing SFTs. Instead of needing to invest large sums to buy an entire property, they can own small portions, making real estate investment much more accessible to individuals with limited capital.
Easier Transactions: Traditional real estate investments involve slow, bureaucratic processes with many intermediaries. This project, using the SUI blockchain, enables faster, more efficient transactions. Investors can trade or sell their SFTs instantly, removing the delays and high costs typically associated with property transactions.
Increased Liquidity: One of the biggest challenges in real estate is liquidity. Selling property can be a slow and costly process. With tokenized ownership, SFTs can be traded on blockchain platforms, providing immediate liquidity. Investors can quickly sell their shares or exit their investment without the waiting period inherent in traditional real estate sales.
Security & Transparency: All transactions are recorded on the blockchain, ensuring transparency, security, and reduced risk of fraud. Investors can track ownership history, verify property details, and be confident that the transaction process is tamper-proof and auditable.
Challenges I ran into
Transaction Fails When Creating and Minting a New Asset: A significant challenge we encountered was transaction failures when trying to create and mint new assets. The process of tokenizing real estate properties into Semi-Fungible Tokens (SFTs) faced unexpected failures at times. These issues could be related to incorrect input parameters, contract execution problems, or the complexity of handling large property data. These failures required us to debug and re-test the processes multiple times to ensure successful minting of the assets.
Slow and Disconnecting WiFi in the Hackathon Arena: During the hackathon, the WiFi connection in the arena was often slow and unstable, which posed a major challenge. The intermittent disconnects and slow speeds made it difficult to perform crucial operations, such as interacting with the Sui blockchain and minting assets. These connectivity issues slowed down development and testing, and we had to adapt by finding more stable spots in the arena or rely on personal mobile hotspots to continue our work.
SUI CLI Not Running on My Laptop and Overheating Issues: Another hurdle was getting the SUI Command Line Interface (CLI) to run smoothly on my laptop. Despite following the installation guides, the CLI often failed to execute properly, which hindered progress. Additionally, when the CLI did work, it caused my laptop to overheat, likely due to the computational demands of blockchain operations. This led to longer working hours and limited the time I could spend on the project each day.
No Direct SFT Integration in SUI Blockchain: The most significant technical challenge was that Sui does not natively support Semi-Fungible Tokens (SFTs). While the Sui blockchain supports NFTs, there is no built-in functionality for creating and managing SFTs directly. To overcome this, we had to break the process into two steps:
