The problem Smart Tourist Safety Monitoring System solves

The proposed system aims to improve tourist safety by addressing several practical problems faced by tourists and authorities:

  1. Difficulty in Monitoring Tourists in Real Time
In crowded or high-risk tourist areas, it is difficult for authorities to keep track of everyone manually. The system uses GPS, geo-fencing, and a centralized dashboard to help authorities monitor tourists in real time.

  2. Fake or Unreliable Tourist Identities
Traditional paper-based records can be lost, changed, or misused. A blockchain-based, time-limited Digital ID provides a more secure and reliable way to verify tourist identities and maintain their records.

  3. Late Detection of Emergencies
Situations such as a tourist going off-route, remaining inactive for an unusual period, entering a restricted area, or going missing may not be noticed immediately. AI-based anomaly detection and geo-fencing can identify such situations and send alerts at an early stage.

  4. Difficulty in Finding Missing or At-Risk Tourists
When a tourist is lost or in danger, finding them quickly can be challenging. The system provides their current or last known location, helping authorities locate them faster and coordinate the rescue process.

  5. Challenges for Visually Impaired Tourists During Emergencies
Conventional emergency apps may not be easy for visually impaired users to operate. The system therefore includes a voice-based emergency feature, where predefined voice keywords can be used to trigger an SOS alert.

  6. Lack of Coordination Between Authorities
Police and tourism departments may work with separate systems and information. A common dashboard brings tourist details, locations, alerts, and incidents together, making coordination easier and faster.

  7. Security and Privacy of Tourist Data
Tourist information is sensitive and needs to be protected from unauthorized access or manipulation. The system uses encryption and blockchain-based mechanisms to improve data security and maintain the integrity of important records.

  8. Poor Connectivity in Remote Areas
Many tourist destinations, especially hilly, forested, and remote regions, have unreliable internet connectivity. The system follows an offline-first approach, allowing important information to be stored locally and synchronized with the central system when connectivity becomes available.

Challenges we ran into

Challenges I Ran Into

  1. Keeping Tourist Data Safe
One of the biggest challenges was protecting sensitive tourist information while making sure the records remained secure and could not be easily altered or misused.

  2. Coordination with Authorities
The system is designed to involve police and tourism departments, so making sure both can access and use the required information efficiently would require proper integration and coordination with the concerned authorities.

  3. Unreliable Connectivity in Remote Areas
Many tourist destinations are located in hills, forests, or other remote areas where internet connectivity can be weak or unavailable. This makes continuous real-time tracking difficult, so the system needs to work reliably even when the connection is unstable.

  4. Making AI Alerts Accurate
Another challenge is teaching the AI to identify genuinely unusual or risky behavior without generating too many false alarms. An alert system that sends unnecessary warnings could make it less useful for authorities.

  5. Reliable Real-Time Tracking
Continuously tracking a moving tourist using GPS and geo-fencing can be difficult, especially in areas where GPS signals are weak or connectivity is poor. Maintaining accurate location information is therefore an important technical challenge.

  6. Making the System Easy to Use
The platform needs to be simple enough for both tourists and authorities to use without confusion. Supporting multiple languages, voice-based features, and accessibility for users with different needs also adds to the overall challenge.
