Suntegrity
The Universal Energy Asset Golden Record
The problem Suntegrity solves
Residential solar is fundamentally broken by opacity, manual processes, and information asymmetries that harm families, slow clean energy adoption, and create systemic inefficiencies in the trillion-dollar energy transition.
Essential Solar Industry Context:
Power Purchase Agreement (PPA): A financial contract where a solar company installs panels on a homeowner's roof for free, then the homeowner pays for the electricity generated at a fixed rate (typically 20-25 years). Think of it like leasing solar panels instead of buying them.
Net Metering: A billing system where homeowners with solar panels receive credit for excess electricity they generate and send back to the grid. During sunny periods, your solar panels might produce more electricity than you use - net metering lets you "bank" that excess energy.
Investment Tax Credit (ITC): A federal tax incentive that allows homeowners to deduct 30% of solar installation costs from their federal taxes. This is the primary financial driver making residential solar affordable, but requires extensive documentation to claim.
kWh (Kilowatt-hour): The standard unit for measuring electricity consumption and production. One kWh powers a typical home for about an hour. Solar systems are rated by how many kWh they produce annually.
The Multi-Layered Crisis: Homeowner Exploitation & Vulnerability
Billing Black Box: Families with solar PPAs receive estimated bills with limited real-time visibility into actual solar production, creating disputes and eroding trust in renewable energy.
Performance Fraud: No mechanism to verify if solar systems deliver promised energy output, leaving homeowners defenseless against underperforming installations.
Contractor Accountability Void: Zero standardized reputation system means families cannot distinguish between quality installers and bad actors
Financial Opacity: Complex PPA financing structures hide true costs and performance metrics from the people paying for them
Systemic Financial Inefficiencies:
Manual Reconciliation Nightmare: Solar companies spend enormous resources on billing disputes, customer service, and manual data reconciliation
Investment Evaluation Paralysis: Without standardized performance data, investors cannot properly value distributed solar assets, limiting capital flow to the sector.
Compliance Chaos: ITC documentation, state incentive tracking, and regulatory compliance done via error-prone spreadsheets
Fragmented Data: Critical asset information scattered across multiple proprietary systems, making comprehensive analysis impossible
Market Structure Problems
Race to the Bottom: Without reputation tracking, quality contractors compete unfairly against those cutting corners
Maintenance Neglect: State-mandated maintenance obligations manually tracked and routinely ignored, leading to system degradation
Greenwashing Enablement: No universal standard for verifying actual renewable energy production claims
Innovation Bottleneck: Lack of standardized data prevents development of new financial products for distributed energy
What Suntegrity Enables:
š For Homeowners:
Real-time solar production monitoring with transparent, automated billing
Contractor reputation scores before installation decisions
Instant verification of system performance against promises
Automated ITC compliance and documentation
ā” For Solar Companies:
Automated PPA management eliminating billing disputes and operational overhead
Real-time performance data for optimizing system maintenance
Customer satisfaction through transparency and instant issue resolution
Reputation building through verified performance metrics
š° For Investors & Financiers:
Standardized performance data for accurate asset valuation
Real-time risk assessment through automated compliance monitoring
New DeFi primitives for distributed energy asset financing
Portfolio management tools for residential solar investments
š Scalable Impact Beyond Residential Solar:
The same performance-based verification framework extends to any measurable energy asset - community solar projects, battery storage systems, electric vehicle charging networks, and industrial renewable installations.
Suntegrity creates the universal infrastructure layer for transparent, accountable energy markets.
Challenges I ran into
Limited UI experience & time constraints
Iām still sharpening my front-end skills, so creating a polished, responsive interface took longer than I expected.
With only a week to finish the hackathon deadline, I had to scope down the UI to the most critical screens.
Responsive layout quirks
Components misaligned at certain breakpoints, especially the dashboard charts and form fields.
I solved this by switching to a lightweight utility-first CSS framework (Tailwind) and using its built-in flex/grid classes for consistent spacing.
Lack of a video demo
I intended to record a walkthrough but ran out of time configuring screen-capture tools.
Instead, I added annotated screenshots and a short GIF of the live dashboard in action, plus clear README instructions to guide evaluators through the key flows.
Balancing features vs. polish
Integrating real-time data hooks and automated billing logic was challenging; I wanted both deep functionality and a slick UI.
I prioritized core functionality first, then iteratively improved the most visible UI pieces. That way, even if the appearance isnāt perfect, the core value shines through.
Next steps
Iāll refine the visual design with more consistent typography, color schemes, and iconography.
I plan to conduct a quick Figma wireframe review with a designer friend to speed up future iterations.
Despite the hurdles, the projectās core features are fully functional. Iām excited to continue polishing the UI and, in a follow-up, provide a smooth video walkthrough of Suntegrity in action.
