The problem sign-out solves
Sign-out day marks the last day of exams for college students and is a cherished tradition where friends and classmates sign each other’s shirts with markers. It’s a celebration that captures the essence of camaraderie and farewell, symbolizing the end of an important chapter in students' lives.
To enhance this tradition, we’ve introduced NFC-chips-linked-to-NFT (deployed on base) T-shirts. This allows graduating students to offer digital souvenirs to those who sign their shirts. This modern twist preserves the spirit of sign-out day while creating a memorable link between real-world interactions and digital mementos, seamlessly merging the physical and digital worlds.
When a student signs a shirt, they can scan the embedded NFC chip with their smartphone to receive a digital NFT. These NFTs act as unique, digital keepsakes of the interaction, transforming each signature into a lasting digital memory. They provide a meaningful way for graduates to give something back to their peers, commemorating shared experiences in a way that transcends physical boundaries.
This approach modernizes the tradition of signing shirts by adding a valuable digital element that can be easily shared and remembered. It bridges the gap between IRL and URL, turning physical keepsakes into digital ones that can be celebrated online. Digital NFTs are stored in a digital wallet or shared on social media, making them an accessible and permanent reminder of the event. They offer a modern way to keep memories alive, enhancing the nostalgic value of sign-out day.
Challenges I ran into
One major challenge we encountered while developing the NFC-enabled NFT T-shirts was embedding the NFC chips into the fabric without sacrificing comfort or durability. Traditional NFC chips are typically rigid and unsuitable for integration into clothing. We needed to either find a flexible chip designed specifically for textile applications that could be quickly and affordably sourced, or develop a method to embed these chips in a way that ensures they are comfortable for the wearer and remain functional and secure, especially given the active nature of sign-out day activities. We ended up utilizing the very recently launched IYK chips and platform, which allowed us to launch fast and easily
