The problem SCAVE solves

According to statistics, the world produces twice the amount of food than it consumes and yet there is malnutrition and hunger prevailing across the world. Us INDIANS, waste as much food as the whole of United Kingdom consumes – a statistic that may not be so much indicative of our love of surfeit, as it is of our population. About 20% of what we buy in urban India ends up being thrown away. You will be amazed to know how much you buy and what you actually consume, needless to say, that the difference is but naturally wasted. While the wastage can't be completely eliminated, it can be reduced. Food prices (expenses) will go up every year. Though wholesale food inflation is lower at 7-8%, prices of the items in the consumption basket of the average urban family are rising faster at 10-12 %.
So, Rs. 15000 is what an average middle class urban family spends on food every month out of which Rs.3000 is wasted and even if the consumer saves Rs.1500 out of it that will amount to Rs.18000 every year.
At our end, we help to plan your purchases, keeping a list of items you last bought along with its date of manufacturing, best until, and component details, date and place of purchase. The costly sauce and spreads and costly ingredients we buy end up getting wasted on the shelves rather than getting consumed. It gets into trash. Our app helps in Intelligent Storage like getting fridge in order along with First-in-first-out rule, along with Inculcating healthy habits: Encourage members to finish everything in their kitchens preventing food wastage.

Challenges we ran into

• House to house survey: One of the major issues was to collect the data depicting the grocery products that are wasted in
each household.
• Unavailability of data base at retailer’s end.
• The other major issue is with the non-uniformity in database management systems of different retailers.
• Marginal revenue generation in the initial stages of the product.
• Convincing retailers to store the expiry & manufacturing date of products if they are not practising to do so.
• Giving our solution a financial savings outlook to promote food saving.
• Channelizing this food before its wasted to respective places like orphanage and NGOs to reduce hunger and malnourishment in our country.

Our Competitors in the market:
As of now, we are not seeing any ‘significant’ platform which is in action in this particular domain. So, there is a high chance of our idea to make an impact on ground level. The only apps which exist are of shopping list management.
