The problem SAGAlyze solves
SAGAlyze is an offline, clinician-exclusive AI dermatology
assistant designed to help dermatologists diagnose and
track skin disease progression with accuracy, fairness, and
privacy. It uses an on-device AI model to classify skin
lesions, generate lesion heatmaps, and visualize treatment
progress — all while ensuring data security and unbiased
performance across all skin tones. The system enhances
clinical efficiency, supports evidence-based decisions, and
empowers patients with secure access to their treatment
history.
Challenges we ran into
As a team primarily experienced in machine learning, venturing into app development posed several challenges for us. While we were confident in building and fine-tuning models, integrating them into a functional and user-friendly application required an entirely different skill set. We initially struggled with understanding frontend frameworks, database management, and API communication between the backend and our ML models. Coordinating version control and ensuring smooth collaboration during rapid development cycles was also tricky at first. Moreover, optimizing model performance for deployment in a lightweight and responsive app environment tested our ability to balance accuracy with efficiency. Despite these hurdles, the learning curve was immensely rewarding — we grew not only as individual developers but also as a cohesive team capable of turning technical ideas into real-world, deployable solutions.
