When we came across this hackathon, hack for inclusion, and the fact that it was specifically for women and non-binary people, we really wanted to create something that favored the more affected communities (women, LGBT, especially-abled, etc). Discussing and putting all our ideas together as a group, we realized that a majority of these communities face a lot of hate online just because of their gender, sexuality, or physical abilities, and therefore we wanted to develop a system that would help reduce cases of cybercrime and hate speech. Hack for Inclusion gave us the motivation and an opportunity to bring this idea to real life. With our knowledge in AI and ML, this seemed like a perfect place to create such a system.
Differentiating hate speech from normal speech using context was the first challenge we faced.
The second challenge we faced was making our system adaptable to the new hate speech or slangs people use.
