Why are you participating for Based Africa?

We are participating in Base Africa because it offers us an opportunity to use blockchain to solve real-world problems in the transportation sector. Our project, RoadBase, connects tricycle passengers and drivers, aiming to make rides more reliable and transparent. We’re starting in local student areas, onboarding over 5,000 new users annually, with 12,000 existing users. Our goal is to expand across Nigeria and eventually globally.

One of our key challenges is ensuring seamless and secure payments between passengers and drivers. By leveraging Base blockchain, we can improve transparency, security, and efficiency in payment processing, eliminating fraud and delays. The decentralized nature of blockchain will also allow us to avoid relying on third-party institutions, which helps streamline the payment process.

Participating in this hackathon aligns with our broader vision of scaling RoadBase efficiently as we grow. Blockchain adoption is rising across Africa, and by integrating it into our platform early, we position ourselves at the forefront of this innovation.

Beyond that, Base Africa provides a valuable learning experience. Through mentorship and collaboration, we can gain insights into blockchain technology, connect with other innovators, and refine RoadBase’s features.

What challenges are you focusing on?

In developing RoadBase, we are focusing on several key challenges within a school environment. First, we want to ensure secure and easy payment processing for students booking tricycle rides. Traditional methods can lead to fraud and disputes, so using blockchain technology will help us create a safe and transparent payment system.

Second, we aim to make it convenient for students to find and book tricycle drivers. Many students struggle to locate reliable drivers and often ask friends for recommendations. RoadBase will provide a centralized platform where they can easily book rides, reducing confusion and wait times.

Another challenge we are addressing is ensuring accurate information about driver locations. Students often face issues when drivers misrepresent their availability. By incorporating real-time tracking, RoadBase will provide students with accurate updates on when their ride will arrive.

Finally, we want to build a community of trustworthy drivers specifically for the school environment. By vetting and onboarding drivers, we can help students feel safe and confident when using our service. This focus on reliability will create a better experience for both passengers and drivers.

How does your submission address this challenge?

Our submission addresses these challenges by implementing a user-friendly platform designed specifically for the school environment.

To ensure secure and easy payment processing, we are integrating blockchain technology, which provides a transparent and secure method for students to pay for their tricycle rides. This eliminates the risks of fraud and disputes associated with traditional payment methods, giving students peace of mind.

For convenience in finding and booking tricycle drivers, RoadBase will serve as a centralized platform where students can easily access a list of available drivers in real time. This system simplifies the booking process, allowing students to find reliable rides without needing to ask friends for recommendations.

To tackle the issue of accurate driver information, we are incorporating real-time tracking features. This will provide students with live updates on driver locations and arrival times, ensuring they know exactly when their ride will arrive. This transparency helps to reduce anxiety about waiting for rides and improves overall satisfaction with the service.

Lastly, to build a community of trustworthy drivers, we will implement a thorough vetting process for all drivers on the platform. This includes background checks and onboarding procedures that focus on safety and reliability. By ensuring that only qualified drivers are part of RoadBase, we can foster trust among students and encourage a safer transportation environment.

Overall, our submission addresses these challenges by creating a secure, convenient, and reliable transport solution tailored specifically for students in a school setting.

Challenges we ran into

While developing RoadBase, we faced significant challenges primarily related to payment integration. One of the most stressful aspects was the lack of adequate documentation for PHP developers working with the payment system we chose to implement. This made it difficult for us to understand how to properly integrate the payment gateway into our platform, causing delays in development.

Without clear guidance, we had to spend a lot of time troubleshooting issues and experimenting with different solutions. This process was frustrating and hindered our progress, as we often found ourselves stuck without clear answers. We reached out to community forums and sought help from other developers, but the scattered information made it challenging to find consistent and reliable resources.

Additionally, ensuring the payment system was both secure and user-friendly was a balancing act. We wanted to create a seamless experience for students booking rides, but the complexities of the integration often led to roadblocks in achieving that goal.

Despite these challenges, we learned valuable lessons in perseverance and the importance of community support. Moving forward, we plan to document our experiences to help other developers facing similar issues, making it easier for them to navigate the payment integration process in the future.
