Regular Heirarchical Dao

Regular Heirarchical Dao

A hierarchical + gamified DAO structure for communities and gaming.

The problem Regular Heirarchical Dao solves

We imagined what a DAO would look like as an on-chain game and built an implementation that's an extension of our Regular NFT collection.

Some of the big complaints around DAOs are that they are slow, cumbersome and bureaucratic. This is a new type of governance structure, using a tree formation that consolidates power at the top. This approach retains some advantages of centralized organizations while avoiding common pitfalls of traditional flat-structured DAOs... and is also FUN!

Users role-play and "work" as part of a company by completing 'directives' (which are like quests or bounties) and earn tokens, digital assets and status.

The core mechanism that we are exploring is the power relationship between users, when they have other users above and beneath them in the hierarchy. They receive “directives” from users above them, and provide directives to user beneath them.

Each "department" has it's own manager, employees and token vault. "Directives" are NFTs that are minted to the department vault, and players can interact with these and claim each directives rewards.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was to figure out the form + structure of the core components, in a way that works now, but is ultimately very flexible and subject to changes + upgrades by our dao. The "DAO" is our unique interpretation of a dao, we aren't using typical dao protocols, we invented our own with the "tree" structure. In the tree, users have parent child relationships, and "levels" that function as the permission system. The voting system is not implemented but will be soon.

A "department" is a node on the tree, and the child nodes underneath are 'employees'. We built a visualizer that can render previews of the big tree structure. Each department has it's own treasury (aka vault) that can store tokens of different types.

The manager of the department can activate "directives" which are NFTs specifically designed for interaction. It was critical to have this NFT collection very flexible, with different directives having different requriements + rewards. We created some initial implementations that 'hire' a player into a company, that award token to the companies treasury, that award token to the player itself -- but there really is no limit to what these directives can be.

Once our token (currently called 'Apples') is in the department treasury, the manager (and only the manager) can spend the treasury in our store, and buy more directives for their deparment. The employees can execute the directives and earn rewards for their deparments.

The possibilities with this system are endless, creating interesting interactions up and down the tree. Players have small groups to interact + strategize with, but also can come together in their parent company and work on the directives provided by the CEO (the player at one of the top roots of the tree).
