A decentralized platform ensuring secure, transparent, and fraud-proof property ownership through blockchain technology with base layer

Why are you participating for Based Africa?

I am participating in Based Africa because it presents a unique opportunity to drive impactful solutions to the challenges faced by African communities, particularly in property ownership management. Through Propertyproof, my decentralized blockchain platform, I aim to combat fraud, corruption, and inefficiencies in property registration systems. Based Africa's mission aligns with my vision of leveraging cutting-edge technology like blockchain leveraging Base Layer 2 to create transparent and secure systems, which can foster trust and development, especially in developing countries.

This platform provides an ideal environment for collaboration, mentorship, and networking with like-minded individuals and organizations passionate about innovation and social impact. By participating, I seek to contribute to meaningful change while learning from experienced innovators across Africa. Moreover, I believe that engaging with this community will provide the visibility and support necessary to scale Propertyproof and make a difference in the lives of property owners, NGOs, and communities affected by property fraud.

Being part of Based Africa enables me to work on the forefront of technological advancements and social impact, combining my passion for innovation with my commitment to creating practical solutions that address real-world issues in Africa.

What challenges are you focusing on?

I am addressing critical challenges in property ownership management in my community with the help of Base through my project, Propertyproof. One of the biggest issues is the rampant fraud and corruption in property transactions, where ownership records are often manipulated or falsified. In many developing countries, including my own, it’s common to see properties sold multiple times to different buyers, leading to disputes, financial losses, and even violence. The lack of transparency, security, and trust in existing property registry systems creates a hostile environment for legitimate property ownership.

Another challenge is the inefficiency and inaccessibility of traditional property registration systems. These systems often involve long, bureaucratic processes that are vulnerable to errors, manipulation, and delays. For the average citizen, especially in rural areas, navigating the process can be time-consuming and expensive, further alienating individuals from securing their property rights.

With Base's scalability and the integration of Layer 2 solutions, Propertyproof tackles these issues by creating a secure, decentralized platform that ensures transparency, immutability, and ease of access to property ownership records. Using blockchain technology, we eliminate the need for intermediaries, thereby reducing fraud, corruption, and administrative bottlenecks.

Furthermore, the platform promotes trust by enabling users to verify property ownership in real-time. Propertyproof empowers communities, property owners, and organizations by providing a system that guarantees the integrity of property records, ensuring fair and secure transactions for all.

How does your submission address this challenge?

My submission, Propertyproof, addresses the challenges of property fraud, corruption, and inefficiencies in the traditional property registration systems through a decentralized, blockchain-based platform. This innovative solution leverages blockchain technology to create a secure, transparent, and immutable property registry, ensuring that property ownership records are safeguarded against tampering and manipulation.

One of the key issues in many developing countries is the lack of trust in property transactions due to the frequent falsification of ownership records. In these regions, properties are often sold multiple times to different individuals, resulting in conflicts, financial losses, and prolonged legal battles. Propertyproof directly tackles this issue by utilizing blockchain’s immutable ledger system. Once a property record is registered on the blockchain, it becomes tamper-proof, meaning no individual or entity can alter the record without leaving a trace. This guarantees the integrity of property data and reduces the risk of fraudulent practices.

The platform also introduces transparency into property transactions. With Propertyproof, any user, regardless of location, can access and verify property records in real-time. This eliminates the need for intermediaries, such as corrupt officials or middlemen, who often exploit the traditional system for personal gain. By putting the power of verification into the hands of property owners and buyers, Propertyproof reduces opportunities for corruption and ensures that all parties involved in a transaction can trust the accuracy of the information.

In addition to addressing fraud and corruption, Propertyproof also solves the inefficiencies and bureaucratic delays associated with traditional property registration systems. Currently, registering a property can be a time-consuming process, often involving multiple government agencies, legal experts, and intermediaries.

Challenges we ran into

We encountered several challenges throughout the development of Propertyproof, both technical and non-technical, that required resilience, teamwork, and external support to overcome.

One of the key non-technical challenges was managing the workload when most of our team members became busy with other commitments. This left only a few of us to handle the bulk of the project, which forced us to wear multiple hats. We had to manage various roles simultaneously, working extra hours and under intense pressure to meet the required deadlines. The experience was stressful, but it taught us the importance of effective time management, communication, and teamwork to ensure that no critical aspect of the project was left behind.

Another significant challenge was the lack of Sepolia test ETH, which we needed to test our smart contracts on the Base testnet. Without the test Sepolia, we couldn’t properly simulate our transactions. We reached out to Dami from the Base team, who generously provided us with the test Sepolia ETH, allowing us to proceed with the necessary testing. This highlighted the importance of community support, as collaboration played a crucial role in helping us overcome this obstacle.

We also encountered several technical issues, especially bugs in our code. These bugs hindered the integration of our smart contracts with the frontend, which slowed down our progress. Debugging these issues was a challenging task, but we didn’t give up. We turned to online resources such as YouTube tutorials and blockchain documentation, and even connected with colleagues from outside Kenya who provided valuable assistance. These external resources were essential in resolving our technical problems, and they underscored the importance of continuous learning and collaboration within the global tech community.

Additional Features

During the Buildathon, we introduced several new features and enhancements to Propertyproof, building on the foundation we had laid before the event. These additions significantly improved the platform’s functionality and user experience, making it more robust and scalable for the target audience.

First, we implemented Layer 2 scalability using the Base blockchain. This was a crucial update aimed at improving performance and significantly reducing transaction costs, making the platform more accessible and affordable for users, especially in developing countries where high gas fees are a common barrier to blockchain adoption. By leveraging Base Layer 2, we ensured that Propertyproof can handle a growing number of transactions without compromising speed or cost efficiency.

We also added real-time property verification and search functionality. This allows users to browse and verify property ownership records directly on the blockchain, promoting transparency and making it easy for potential buyers, sellers, and authorities to access property details without intermediaries. This feature enhances the trust and security of the platform, addressing one of the core challenges in property management.

In addition, we enhanced the user interface by refining the Asset Management Dashboard, making it more intuitive and user-friendly. This update ensures that users can easily manage their registered properties, track ownership changes, and initiate secure transfers, all through a streamlined and modern interface.

These new features, added during the Buildathon, took Propertyproof to the next level by addressing scalability, transparency, and ease of use—key factors for the platform's success.
