The problem ProofChain solves
The cryptocurrency ecosystem has faced significant challenges related to the transparency and solvency of exchanges, resulting in eroded trust among users and stakeholders. High-profile cases of exchange insolvency, mismanagement of user funds, and fraud have raised concerns about the reliability and security of centralized exchanges (CEXs).
Challenges I ran into
Building the Proof of Reserves system during the hackathon was challenging, especially constructing the Merkle Tree for liabilities due to the sheer volume of user balances. Ensuring computational efficiency while handling large datasets required extensive optimization. Preserving user privacy added complexity, as cryptographic techniques like hashing needed to be both secure and scalable. The dynamic nature of reserves and liabilities, with constant updates from deposits, withdrawals, and trades, made real-time Merkle Tree updates difficult.
Verifying on-chain reserves transparently posed challenges, particularly integrating with blockchain APIs and handling multi-signature wallets. Scalability was a key concern, as the solution needed to support millions of users while maintaining performance. Implementing advanced cryptographic features like zero-knowledge proofs for enhanced privacy demanded deep technical expertise. Additionally, integrating the system seamlessly with exchange infrastructures and providing users a secure way to verify their balances without exposing sensitive data added complexity.
Time and resource constraints during the hackathon further amplified these challenges, but they pushed the team to innovate and deliver a functional solution, showcasing a deep understanding of proof-of-reserves systems.
