During the 2016 World Youth Day, Pope Francis officiated the Eucharistic celebration before the portrayal of the Divine Mercy. Sister Faustina, a Polish religious sister, became a member of the Warsaw-based congregation of the Sisters of Mercy in 1925. Her journal, subsequently released as “Diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul,” details her numerous mystical encounters and dialogues with Christ. Her spiritual advisor was Father Michael Sopocko, a theologian and clergyman.

In 1930, Sister Faustina was transferred to the religious community in Płock, Poland. She recounted that on the evening of Sunday, February 22, 1931, she witnessed an apparition of Christ as the “Monarch of Divine Mercy,” adorned in a white robe.
She described Christ’s right hand lifted in benediction, the other hand gesturing towards his heart, from where two significant beams, one crimson and the other pale, appeared to originate just below his heart.

In her writings (Notebook 1, entries 47 and 48), she noted Christ’s message to her:
“Craft an icon following the model you observe, with the inscription: ‘Jesus, I trust in You.’ It is my wish for this icon to be honored, initially in your sanctuary, and subsequently across the globe. I assure that the individual who reveres this icon shall not be lost.”
Sister Christine, another member of the convent, later remarked that on that night, beams of illumination from the window caught the attention of onlookers across the street, suggesting it was a tangible manifestation rather than a mere vision.
Lacking artistic skills, Sister Faustina sought assistance from her fellow sisters but to no avail. She tried to draft the image using charcoal on fabric but achieved minimal success. In her journal (Notebook 1, entry 53), she expressed Christ’s assurance of “tangible aid” for this endeavor. In November 1932, Sister Faustina departed Płock, returning to Warsaw, and in May 1933, she was dispatched to the Vilnius convent to serve as a horticulturist.
