DormWallet

Where student money clicks

The problem DormWallet solves

Problem DormWallet Solves

Students living in hostels, dorms, or shared apartments often face messy, time-consuming, and error-prone finance management:

Tracking Shared Expenses
Roommates pay for utilities, groceries, WiFi, mess fees, and other shared bills — keeping track manually leads to confusion and conflicts.

Budgeting Challenges
Students struggle to plan and stick to a monthly budget because there’s no fun, interactive way to see where money is going.

Bill Splitting Hassles
Dividing costs fairly among friends often involves manual calculations, notes, or chat reminders, which are tedious and easily forgotten.

Lack of Financial Awareness
Students rarely get insights into their spending habits or see trends over time, which can lead to overspending and stress.

Existing Tools Are Not Student-Friendly
Most expense apps are either designed for adults, banks, or businesses — not for small, shared living groups with social interactions.

How DormWallet Fixes This

Automatically splits shared expenses between friends.

Generates interactive dashboards showing spending breakdowns.

Provides AI-powered smart insights and notifications to keep users on track.

Makes budgeting fun, visual, and interactive.

Reduces conflicts and confusion over who owes what.

Essentially, DormWallet turns messy, manual finance tracking into a clean, collaborative, and stress-free experience for students.

Challenges I ran into

Interactive UI Complexity

Problem: Making the dashboard fun, clickable, and visually appealing without slowing down the app.

Solution: Used Tailwind + React state + Canvas to create animated charts, collapsible expense cards, and interactive buttons efficiently.

Dynamic Shared Expense Display

Problem: Updating charts and balances automatically when users or expenses change.

Solution: Built a React state-driven algorithm so adding or removing friends/expenses instantly updates the pie chart and balances.

Responsive Design

Problem: Ensuring the dashboard looks good on both desktop and mobile while keeping animations smooth.

Solution: Leveraged Tailwind’s responsive utilities and CSS transitions for hover/slide effects.
