Pivot is an innovative crisis management tool designed to mitigate the financial fallout from natural disasters for investors and businesses. By leveraging real-time data and NLP technology, Pivot provides immediate insights into the financial implications of inclement weather and disasters. It sources live updates from the national weather service, presenting them on an intuitive map to highlight the financial risks associated with specific geographic areas. Pivot's chatbot further aids users by offering concise summaries of potential financial impacts, allowing for swift and informed decision-making. This unique combination of features positions Pivot as an invaluable asset for those looking to safeguard their investments against the unpredictable nature of natural disasters, ensuring they can navigate through storms with confidence and strategic foresight.
Challenges we ran into
In the development of Pivot, our team encountered several technical challenges that required innovative solutions. The first significant challenge was the acquisition and preparation of datasets. Locating public datasets with detailed weather alerts and geographic information proved difficult, necessitating the use of web crawling and scraping techniques. The subsequent data cleaning process, which involved removing duplicates and null values, was crucial to ensure the data's suitability for analysis.
Another complex aspect was the implementation of the map visualization. The integration of real-time weather alerts with geographic coordinates demanded a high level of precision and interactivity in the visualization. The dynamic nature of the weather data added to the complexity, as we needed to ensure that the information displayed was always current. The limitations of existing open-source frameworks for this task led us to develop a bespoke vectorized database and visualization component, a process that was both challenging and time-consuming.
The development of the chatbot feature also presented a steep learning curve. With no prior experience in chatbot development, we had to navigate through the intricacies of building a Natural Language Processing (NLP) model that could be effectively integrated into our application. We utilized the Intel Developer Cloud as our framework, but tailoring it to fit our specific requirements was a complex task that demanded significant effort and ingenuity.
These challenges provided us with valuable learning experiences in data management, software development, and the necessity of custom solutions when existing technologies are inadequate. They underscored the importance of persistence and creative problem-solving in overcoming technical hurdles.
