Onchain Scholars

Providing funding for access to tertiary education with trustless escrow contracts and on-chain attestations.

Why are you participating for Based SEA?

I am Indonesian, and currently I've noticed that many things have been built with BASE that could potentially increase web3 adoption in the region. One such example is the Rupiah Stablecoin (IDRX). I would like to immerse myself more in the ecosystem and I believe joining the hackathon is the best way of doing so. I would also like to socialize with local builders!

What challenges are you focusing on?

  • One thing that could potentially solve many problems in our country is the access to education. With the help of Onchain Scholars, we hope that many people would be able to access tertiary education with the help of the community.
  • Scholarships in Indonesia tend to not be transparent and prone to fund mismanagement. which we aim to provide a solution for by leveraging EAS Base (Ethereum Attestation Service - BASE), and escrow smart contracts built on BASE.
  • Certificates and transcripts are somewhat not reliable due tampering or fake issuances.
  • Currently, tertiary education scholarship are not very accessible to the general public and control is siloed to foundations. We aim to democratize the process of education sponsoring by allowing people to donate for an education cause. People alone weak, people together strong!

How does your submission address this challenge?

  • Milestone based crowdfunding helps students fund their tertiary education and prevent mismanagement from the students' side. Funding by the people democratizes access to tertiary education.
  • Authenticity of certifications status using Ethereum Attestation Service can improve quality of graduates and credibly certify results. This allows us to prevent tamperings from happening.
  • Fund management using escrow smart contracts which does not have any human management. This addresses the mismanagement that happen a lot in our country. Each campaign will have their own dedicated smart contracts.
  • We want all sides to feel reassured that their funds are going to the right places.

Challenges I ran into

  • I am a Solidity Beginner. Designing the contracts took time.
  • This idea was another idea that I've came up with after pivoting from the first one, which I had to do since I realized it does not fit into the context of the buildathon. Many people have also built that first of idea of mine with production-grade robustness. This pivoting took some time.
  • I am a full time dev on a company, less time to spare sometimes.
  • Making the criteria for the milestones more generic. I have to resort to using hard metrics like GPA or P/F to measure milestones, which sometimes cannot be measured like that.
  • Making the process smooth for non web3-native people.
  • I cannot obtain basenames on test networks with the Smart Wallet, transferring from another wallet was also not possible.

Additional Features

Purely built during the buildathon (except the Scaffold-Eth Boilerplate), as shown on the git commits.

Cheer Project

Cheering for a project means supporting a project you like with as little as 0.0025 ETH. Right now, you can Cheer using ETH on Arbitrum, Optimism and Base.
