Fueling open-source with on-chain rewards
The problem OctaCred solves
Open-source developers often struggle to get recognized or rewarded for their contributions. While GitHub tracks activity, it doesn’t translate effort into tangible incentives. Communities want to support contributors, but lack transparent, scalable tools to do so.
OctaCred solves this by turning GitHub activity into on-chain rewards.
What People Can Use It For
-
Project maintainers can automatically track contributor impact and allocate rewards fairly.
-
DAOs and funding communities can use GitHub-linked quadratic voting to decide who gets funded.
-
Developers can earn crypto rewards for their commits, pull requests, and issue activity.
-
Protocol teams can incentivize open-source work without manual tracking or spreadsheets.
-
Grant programs can plug into OctaCred to distribute funds based on real contribution data.
How It Makes Tasks Easier
-
No manual scoring: OctaCred pulls GitHub data and computes contributor scores automatically.
-
Transparent voting: Quadratic voting ensures community-driven, fair allocation of rewards.
-
On-chain payouts: Rewards are distributed directly to contributors’ wallets, no middlemen.
Challenges I ran into
One major hurdle was accurately linking GitHub identities to wallet addresses in a way that’s secure, verifiable, and resistant to sybil attacks. Since GitHub doesn’t natively support wallet verification, we had to design a custom flow that allows contributors to sign a message with their wallet.
