The Problem NovaLance Solves
The Economics of Freelancing Are Broken
The freelance platform market reached $7.33 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow to $16.89 billion by 2029. In Indonesia alone, 20 million people work as gig workers, making it one of the fastest-growing markets in Southeast Asia.
But there's a fundamental problem. Platform fees extract billions from freelancer earnings.
1. High Platform Fees Reduce Income
Upwork charges 10-15% fees, Fiverr takes 20%. For a freelancer earning $50,000 annually, these fees mean losing $5,000-$10,000 to platforms.
2. Payment Risk Remains Unsolved
Traditional escrow is expensive and slow. Blockchain platforms like CryptoTask still charge 3% fees, merely shifting extraction on-chain.
3. Trust Lacks Transparency
Centralized dispute resolution produces inconsistent outcomes. Freelancers have no portable, verifiable proof of work.
4. Idle Capital Creates No Value
Project funds sitting in traditional escrow generate zero return while losing purchasing power to inflation. This wasted potential keeps platforms dependent on extractive fees.
What People Can Use NovaLance For
For Freelancers
Zero platform fees mean keeping 100% of quoted earnings plus a yield bonus. Guaranteed payment through smart contract escrow locks funds before work begins. On-chain reputation provides verifiable work history. IDRX integration offers Rupiah-equivalent stablecoin with tax compliance.
For Project Owners
Secure escrow releases funds only when work is completed. Yield rebates reduce effective cost below the deposit amount. Escrowed funds actively earn yield instead of depreciating against inflation.
The Core Innovation
NovaLance eliminates idle capital while creating a zero-fee platform. When project funds enter escrow, the default split is 90% vault escrow and 10% Aave V3 yield generation. Project owners can adjust this ratio based on risk tolerance.
The Aave portion supplies liquidity to lending pools where borrowers pay interest. That interest powers our revenue model while offsetting inflation for project owners.
When the project completes, the system automatically withdraws all funds from Aave including accumulated yield. The freelancer receives 100% of the project budget PLUS 40% of generated yield. The project owner receives 40% of yield as a rebate. NovaLance keeps 20% of yield as platform revenue.
The Result
Freelancers earn 100%+ of their quotes. Clients pay less than their deposit through yield rebates. Platform stays sustainable through productive capital deployment. Everyone wins except extractive middlemen.
Example
A Rp 50,000,000 project deposits Rp 45,000,000 to vault and Rp 5,000,000 to Aave. After 3 months at 5% APY, Aave generates Rp 62,315 in yield. Freelancer receives Rp 50,024,926 (100.05%). Project owner gets Rp 24,926 back, paying only Rp 49,975,074 (99.95%). NovaLance earns Rp 12,463 from yield. In traditional escrow, the same funds would have lost approximately Rp 362,500 to inflation.
How NovaLance Makes Freelancing Easier and Safer
Easier
One-click escrow provides instant on-chain settlement. Mobile-first Base Mini-App design. IDRX payments use familiar Rupiah-equivalent pricing.
Safer
Smart contract guarantees enforce payment through code. Battle-tested Aave V3 security with over $43 billion in total value locked. Timeout protection allows freelancers to claim funds if client ghosts. Non-custodial design means you control your keys.
Challenges we ran into
1. Late Pivot from LP to Lending
The Context
Our team is new to Web3, so we spent over 50% of our development timeline purely on research and understanding DeFi mechanics.
The Hurdle
We initially planned to just developing standard escrow system. However, late in the process, we realized most freelancing platforms suffer from huge service fee, which meant freelancers could end up withdrawing less money than they agreed upon.
The Solution
We pivoted entirely to Aave V3 Lending. While this forced us to relearn a new protocol under extreme time pressure, it was the only way to guarantee principal protection (1 USDC = 1 USDC) for our users.
2. Async State Management in Remote Team
The Context
We operated as a semi-remote team with a split between backend and frontend developers who had never integrated a dApp before.
The Hurdle
Coordinating the "handshake" between the Frontend and Smart Contract was chaotic. We faced constant "state mismatches" where the UI would update before the blockchain transaction was finalized because our local environments weren't synced, leading to false success messages during testing.
The Solution
We implemented strict Optimistic UI patterns combined with wagmi event listeners. Instead of waiting for the remote backend to confirm every action, the frontend optimistically updates the UI while a background listener verifies the transaction, effectively decoupling our workflows.
3. Handling Non-Standard Token Decimals
The Context
Integrating IDRX (Indonesian Rupiah Stablecoin) was a non-negotiable requirement for our local market fit.
The Hurdle
Most DeFi documentation assumes tokens have 18 decimals (like ETH). IDRX only has 2 decimals. Early in our integration, this caused massive calculation errors where a deposit of 10,000 IDRX was read by our contract as a microscopic fraction, breaking our yield calculations.
The Solution
We had to rewrite our core math utilities. We implemented a dynamic decimal check function that inspects the token contract before performing any arithmetic, ensuring that financial data is accurate regardless of the token standard.
