Your arena. Your pick. Your win
The problem BSA – Base Sports Arena solves
🏈 The global sports betting industry is a massive market, expected to generate nearly $78 billion in revenue by 2025 and surpass $95 billion by 2029, with more than 200 million participants worldwide. Yet, despite this scale, the existing ecosystem is dominated by centralized platforms that are opaque, geographically restricted, heavily regulated, and often require users to trust intermediaries with their funds and data. Payout delays, limited access, lack of transparency, and zero user ownership are common pain points across the industry.
Base Sports Arena (BSA) addresses these challenges by reimagining the experience as a borderless, onchain prediction platform — not traditional betting. Instead of relying on centralized operators, BSA enables fans to participate in weekly prediction challenges directly from their wallets, with results and rewards transparently managed by smart contracts. Participants maintain full ownership of their funds, rewards are paid in USDC directly to their wallets, and the entire experience is permissionless and global.
By aligning incentives between fans and the platform and eliminating intermediaries, BSA creates a safer, more transparent, and more engaging way to participate in the global sports prediction economy — unlocking a significant opportunity in a market that is already massive but still constrained by legacy systems.
- 🧠 Transforms knowledge into value: Fans put their understanding of the game to the test by predicting outcomes and competing with a global community.
- 🔐 Guarantees trust and transparency: All participation fees, pools, and payouts are handled by smart contracts — fully verifiable, tamper-proof, and without intermediaries.
- 🌍 Removes borders and barriers: Anyone with a wallet can join, predict, and win — regardless of where they are, with no restrictions or gatekeepers.
- ⚡ Aligns incentives for everyone: Participants, communities, and the platform all benefit from increased activity, creating a shared-value ecosystem.
- 🏆 Turns fans into active participants: Every game becomes an opportunity to engage more deeply, track performance, and claim real, onchain rewards.
In short, BSA transforms the simple act of predicting sports outcomes into a borderless, transparent, and rewarding experience — redefining how fans interact with the games they love.
Challenges I ran into
🧠 While building Base Sports Arena (BSA), two major technical and conceptual challenges emerged that significantly shaped the project’s design and roadmap:
1. Using Participant Pools as Yield-Generating Collateral
One of our core long-term goals is to make BSA more than just a pick’em platform — we want participant pools to work for the users while competitions are ongoing. The idea is to deploy the pooled USDC into yield-bearing strategies (e.g., restaking through EigenLayer or other DeFi protocols) and then return both principal and yield when the pool closes.
This, however, presents several hurdles:
- 🏦 Custody and liquidity management: Pools must remain fully redeemable while being deployed elsewhere, requiring complex smart contract logic to ensure safety and instant withdrawals.
- 📊 Risk management: Yield strategies must be secure, non-custodial, and compatible with regulatory and user expectations.
- ⚙️ Accounting complexity: Tracking user shares, yield distribution, and prize calculation while funds are deployed adds significant onchain logic and testing overhead.
We are approaching this challenge by designing a modular pool contract architecture that separates participation logic from yield strategies. This will allow us to safely integrate restaking and yield opportunities as optional layers once the MVP is stable.
2. Bridging Real-Time Offchain Results With Onchain Logic
The second big challenge is connecting real-world sports data — which determines the outcome of each pool — with the onchain system. Real-time results are essential for automated payouts and trustless operation, but reliable and verifiable data feeds for sports outcomes are still a developing space.
Key obstacles here include:
- ⏱️ Latency and trust: Ensuring data is both accurate and delivered quickly enough to trigger payouts without manual intervention.
- 🔐 Oracles and verification: Building or integrating a reliable oracle system capable of securely handling thousands of events across multiple leagues.
- 🧩 Scalability: As we expand beyond the NFL, the diversity of data sources and formats increases complexity exponentially.
For the MVP, we’re solving this by using an admin-triggered manual input for results, allowing us to validate the full payout logic while we design an oracle integration strategy. Future iterations will leverage decentralized oracle networks and possibly partnerships with real-time sports data providers to automate this layer securely.
These two challenges — yield generation and real-time data bridging — are not only the most difficult aspects of BSA, they’re also what will define its long-term potential. Solving them transforms BSA from a simple pick’em app into a fully composable onchain sports infrastructure layer.

What is your product’s unique value proposition?
Base Sports Arena reimagines the sports picks experience by removing the intermediaries and giving ownership back to the fans. Instead of relying on centralized platforms to hold funds, manage results, or distribute prizes, every step — from pool creation to payouts — is handled by transparent smart contracts. Users retain full control of their participation and receive rewards directly into their wallets without friction, delays, or trust in a third party.
Because it’s built fully onchain, BSA is inherently borderless, global, and permissionless — anyone with a wallet can join, compete, and win from anywhere in the world. This openness transforms a simple weekly picks game into a global arena where fans interact under the same transparent and verifiable rules.
Finally, BSA aligns incentives between fans and the platform itself. The more users participate, the more the ecosystem grows — enabling features like yield-bearing prize pools, referral rewards, and community-driven competitions. This creates a shared value loop where fans are not just players, but stakeholders in the success of the product.
Our alpha build validates this vision by demonstrating the core mechanics: trustless pool management, direct payouts in USDC, and a seamless onboarding flow — all built natively on Base.
Who is your target customer?
Our target users are passionate sports fans who want to go beyond passively watching games and actively participate in the outcome. They’re individuals who already follow leagues like the NFL, NBA, Premier League, or MLB closely — often engaging in fantasy leagues, pick’em pools, or betting apps — but are frustrated by the lack of transparency, slow payouts, geographic restrictions, and centralized control of traditional platforms.
We’re also focused on the growing segment of web3-native users who are eager to see real-world use cases for onchain applications beyond trading or DeFi. These users value verifiable ownership, trustless interactions, and the ability to participate from anywhere in the world without intermediaries.
We’ve validated this audience through initial community testing and direct conversations with sports and crypto communities on platforms like Farcaster, Twitter, and Discord. Early feedback shows strong interest in a product that combines the excitement of sports predictions with the ownership and transparency of blockchain — especially one that’s global, frictionless, and rewards active participation.
Who are your closest competitors and how are you different?
🏁 Our main competitor is Pickem — a mini app built for the Farcaster ecosystem that allows users to make weekly picks for NFL games. While Pickem has proven that there’s demand for sports prediction games within the onchain community, Base Sports Arena (BSA) takes this concept much further in scope, accessibility, and functionality.
Key Differentiators
-
🌐 Broader reach and accessibility
Pickem is limited to the Farcaster ecosystem as a mini app, whereas BSA is a consumer-grade web app available to everyone — accessible through browsers, Base App, and later integrated into Farcaster and other onchain platforms. -
🏆 Multi-sport support
Pickem only supports the NFL, while BSA is designed to support multiple major sports leagues and tournaments including the NBA, Premier League, La Liga, FIFA World Cup, MLB, and more. This allows us to attract a global audience and maintain year-round engagement. -
👥 Private leagues and social gameplay
BSA introduces private leagues, allowing users to create and host their own pools, invite friends, and compete in closed groups. This social component turns prediction into a shared experience — something Pickem doesn’t currently offer.
In short:
While Pickem focuses on a single league within one social platform, Base Sports Arena is building a scalable, cross-platform, multi-sport ecosystem — turning sports fandom into a global, permissionless, and social experience powered by the Base blockchain.
What is your distribution strategy and why?
Our distribution strategy is focused on building a global community of engaged users through a mix of community-driven growth, referral-based incentives, and strategic partnerships — all designed to align user participation with the success of the platform.
We’ll start by activating highly engaged sports and Web3 communities on platforms like Farcaster, Twitter, and Discord, leveraging content, challenges, and referral programs funded by the incentive portion of each pool. The ability to compete globally, win rewards directly to a wallet, and retain full ownership of participation is a natural fit for these audiences.
As the platform scales, we plan to partner with sports content creators, fantasy leagues, and influencer communities to introduce BSA to broader fan bases, while integrating with Web3-native tools (wallets, mini-apps, and Base ecosystem partners) to make onboarding seamless.
This approach works for our product because the user motivation is intrinsic — fans are already engaged with sports and prediction games. By aligning financial incentives (rewards, referrals, and streak bonuses) with community growth, we can scale participation sustainably and turn users into evangelists for the platform.
