NexPager – On-chain messaging for decentralized communication.
The problem NexPager solves
Traditional pagers have been widely used in hospitals, emergency services, and industries where quick, reliable communication is essential. However, these legacy systems come with several drawbacks:
- Centralized & Costly Infrastructure
Conventional pagers rely on telecom providers and dedicated radio networks, making them expensive to maintain and operate.
Service outages, network congestion, or infrastructure failures can disrupt communication. - Limited Coverage & Functionality
Traditional pagers work within a fixed range, often requiring expensive repeater stations to extend coverage.
They support only one-way messaging, restricting real-time responses. - Lack of Security & Transparency
Messages in traditional pager networks are often unencrypted and susceptible to interception.
No verifiable proof of message delivery or sender authenticity exists.
How NexPager Solves These Issues
NexPager leverages blockchain to create a decentralized, censorship-resistant paging system that solves these problems:
✅ No reliance on telecom networks – Messages are sent via smart contracts, eliminating middlemen.
✅ Global reach – Anyone with a crypto wallet can receive messages anywhere in the world.
✅ Two-way messaging – Unlike traditional pagers, users can both send and receive messages.
✅ Immutable & verifiable – Messages are stored permanently on-chain, ensuring integrity and authenticity.
✅ Low-cost & future-proof – No monthly fees or infrastructure maintenance costs.
By replacing outdated pagers with a blockchain-based system, NexPager ensures reliable, secure, and borderless communication for critical industries and personal use.
User Interaction and Data Flow
The user visits our website where he is prompted for verification of his identity. Once he verifies himself, he is authorised to access the platform. The user will need to connect his wallet to initialize his account. The user then can use it to send messages to a pager.
The project architecture and development process
Nexpager uses base L2 EVM based blockchain for communication. Nexpager has a smart contract deployed on base network which facilitates the communication between the pagers. Each wallet address represent a Pager in this contract. The communication is one to one between these members. Base has lower gas fees and it only costs to send messages and not to view it, therefore the cost of operation is very low.
Nexpager is also a controlled application in terms of user's accessibility where only the authorized users get the access to the platform. This is done using Celo's self protocol, which is used for identity verification. Furthermore Nexpager also implements Base's onchainkit smart wallet for efficiency.

Key differentiators and uniqueness of the project
Key Differentiators and Uniqueness of NexPager
NexPager is a decentralized, blockchain-powered pager system that eliminates the need for traditional communication infrastructure. It offers a novel approach to messaging by integrating blockchain technology with physical hardware.
- On-Chain Messaging and Decentralized Communication
Unlike conventional messaging systems that rely on centralized servers, NexPager stores messages directly on the blockchain. This approach ensures:
Censorship resistance – No single entity can modify or remove messages.
Global accessibility – Messages can be sent and received from anywhere with an internet connection and a Base-compatible wallet.
Tamper-proof storage – Messages are permanently recorded on the blockchain.
2. Web3 Wallet-Based Identity (No Phone Numbers Required)
Traditional messaging platforms require users to register with a phone number or email. NexPager eliminates this requirement by leveraging Web3 wallets for identity verification. This ensures:
Privacy and anonymity – No personal information is required to use the platform.
Decentralized authentication – Users authenticate themselves through their wallet without reliance on third-party services.
Borderless communication – Free from telecom carrier restrictions or SMS fees.
3. Integration with ESP32 Hardware Pager
NexPager introduces a physical pager device that retrieves and displays messages from the blockchain. This feature distinguishes it from other blockchain messaging systems by bridging digital and physical communication.
Real-world application – Messages are displayed on an ESP32-driven LCD screen.
IoT and blockchain synergy – A practical use case for blockchain-based communication in embedded systems.
Offline accessibility – Messages can be viewed without requiring a smartphone or internet connectivity at all times.
Trade-offs and shortcuts while building
One key trade-off was not implementing one-to-many message transactions in the initial version. Currently, NexPager only supports one-to-one messaging, where a user can send a message to a single recipient at a time. A broader broadcasting system, enabling one message to be sent to multiple recipients simultaneously, was considered but postponed
