The problem NeuroNest-Dementia Care Companion App solves

While caregivers often struggle with stress and inefficacy in providing consistent support, dementia sufferers have great difficulties with memory loss, daily task management, recognizing loved ones, and safety concerns including wandering. Designed to solve these problems holistically, NeuroNest is an artificial intelligence app. With adaptive alerts that change frequency and method (text, voice, vibration) depending on patient responses, it provides emotion-based reminders using familiar voices—family or AI-generated—for tasks including taking medication, drinking water, or attending appointments. Task confirmations given to caregivers upon completion guarantee responsibility. Along with a memory recall function showing past images or plays recorded memories, the app also includes face and object recognition to enable patients identify family members and significant objects (e.g., medicine, keys) using the phone camera. NeuroNest offers location-based reminders (e.g., buy medicine near a pharmacy), geo-fencing to notify caregivers if the patient leaves a safe area, and an SOS button for emergency location alerts. An AI chatbot companion for conversation and reminders, cognitive games like memory recall and puzzles, and a mood tracker that recommends relaxing activities (music, meditation) are further ways it promotes emotional well-being and cognitive stimulation. NeuroNest eases patients' lives, lessens caregiver stress, and keeps families involved and connected by lowering confusion, increasing independence, and improving safety.

Challenges I ran into

Developing NeuroNest came with several real-life challenges across technical, user experience, and financial aspects. AI integration for face and object recognition was complex, requiring server-side processing for efficiency. On the user experience side, dementia patients struggled with a complex UI, so a minimalist design with large fonts and voice guidance was implemented. Caregivers needed instant notifications, which led to the integration of Twilio SMS and WhatsApp alerts. Patients often ignored reminders, so emotion-based AI reminders using familiar voices improved compliance. Financially, API costs for AI processing and GPS tracking were high, so open-source AI models and Firebase free-tier storage were used to cut expenses. Deploying the python-flask backend on Render led to downtime issues, so AWS Lambda (serverless) was chosen for better efficiency. Data privacy concerns arose due to storing sensitive patient information, leading to AES encryption and GDPR-compliant . Through these challenges, NeuroNest was refined for better performance, security, and user accessibility, ensuring it remains a reliable support system for dementia patients and caregivers.
