Movo
Borderless Payroll, Seamless Future
The problem Movo solves
Traditional cross-border payroll faces major challenges that directly impact both employers and workers. International salary transfers rely on correspondent banks, where each intermediary adds significant fees (often 5–10% per transaction). For small startups and remote-first companies, these overheads quickly become unsustainable.
Beyond cost, settlement is slow. International bank transfers typically take 2–5 business days, causing payroll delays that frustrate workers and erode trust. Employers also lack real-time visibility into payment status, creating operational uncertainty.
Transparency is another key issue. Workers often cannot track where their salaries are stuck, while employers struggle to provide proof of payments during audits or compliance checks. This lack of auditability increases risks for both sides.
Moreover, workers are limited in how they can receive their salaries. Payments are usually restricted to local bank accounts, leaving freelancers, contractors, and remote employees with no option to choose faster and more liquid alternatives such as crypto. This restriction reduces financial control for the receiver.
Finally, the fragmented nature of global financial infrastructure adds complexity. Each country operates its own rails, forcing employers to manage multiple integrations when scaling internationally. This creates unnecessary technical and administrative burdens.
Challenges we ran into
Complex Cross-Border Infrastructure
Each country has its own payment rails and regulations. Integrating with multiple systems at once was technically complex and time-consuming, especially without a unified standard.
Balancing On-Chain and Off-Chain Flows
Payroll requires both blockchain transparency and fiat accessibility. Designing a system that connects stablecoins to local rails like IDRX while still maintaining low fees and fast settlement was a major challenge.
User Roles & Flexibility
Implementing a seamless flow where a wallet can dynamically act as a sender or receiver required careful backend design. Ensuring workers could switch between bank withdrawals and crypto payouts without friction was not trivial.
Transparency vs. Privacy
Recording every payroll transaction on-chain brings auditability, but also raises questions about how much data should be visible. Finding the right balance between transparency for compliance and privacy for users was an ongoing concern.
Cost & Accessibility for Startups
Startups and small employers need affordable solutions. Building an architecture that minimizes intermediaries while keeping integration simple and scalable was one of the hardest trade-offs.
