The problem Mizan solves

Sending money across a border is easy. Turning it back into money you can actually spend is not.

An international student in Kuala Lumpur needs living expenses from home. A migrant worker needs to send wages back to their family. Both are stuck with the same broken options.

The problems:

  • Bank wires cost ~USD 45 and take 2–5 days.
  • Money changers take a cut on the rate and a fee.
  • Both need a bank account a new arrival cannot open.
  • Crypto sends fast, but the money is stuck as a token.
  • Cashing out means seed phrases, exchanges and KYC.
  • The last mile is ignored — money must land as local currency.

What Mizan does:

  • A Sui account from a Google sign-in. No seed phrase.
  • Sends in ~2 seconds for about two cents.
  • Shows your balance in 11 local currencies.
  • Cashes out to a bank account or e-wallet, fees shown.
  • Compares three licensed on-ramps before you buy.
  • Splits rent and bills with housemates.
  • Pays by voice — "Hey Trisha, send twenty five to Ayesha."

Built for Malaysia's 130,000+ international students and 2.7 million migrant workers.

Challenges we ran into

We had a week, a team that came together late, and a product that touches a blockchain, a browser microphone and an OAuth popup — three things that each fail in their own way.

Most of our time went on the parts that looked simple and were not.

  • Forming the team late. Scoped hard on day one and cut everything else.
  • The assistant answered itself. Chrome sends every phrase twice; we now strip her name wherever it appears.
  • Spoken numbers were wrong. "Twenty five to Ayesha" parsed as 27. Removed homophones, added spoken confirmation.
  • Google's popup was blocked. It must open straight from the click, so the setup animation runs behind it.
  • A transfer recorded as zero. The screen and the ledger used different field names. No error, just a wrong number.
  • No route from SUI to a bank. It cannot be one step, so we built two and showed both fees.
