The problem Minga-Grid solves
Every evening, Colombia’s electricity grid faces its most expensive hours. Between 6–9 PM, wholesale power can cost 1.5–1.8× the daily average as expensive thermal generation meets peak demand.
The cheapest capacity on a stressed grid is demand that temporarily steps aside. But small businesses and communities cannot realistically participate in demand-response programs: metering, verifying reductions, contracting, and paying thousands of sites costs more than the energy savings.
MINGA Grid removes that operational friction. It lets a site commit to reducing consumption during a grid event, verifies the result against an agreed baseline using signed smart-meter readings, and settles the payment automatically. This creates a practical way to make verified demand reduction accessible, auditable, and economically viable in Latin America.
Challenges I ran into
One of the hardest parts was dealing with HSK testnet RPC delays. Sometimes a transaction was already confirmed, but the next read still showed the old contract state. This made a newly created contract look empty, a funded allowance look missing, or a payment look like it had not happened yet.
We fixed this by adding small confirmation checks after every important on-chain action. Instead of immediately moving to the next step, the app waits until the chain returns the updated state.
Another challenge was making the agent feel real. We did not want an agent that always says yes just because it makes the demo look good. It checks every signed meter reading, rebuilds the baseline, calculates the energy reduction, and refuses to sign if the site did not meet its commitment. The contract also requires both the meter and the agent signatures, so one machine alone can never release funds.
Finally, we had to be honest about what the prototype proves. The meter data is simulated and signed with a development key. It proves that the verification and settlement flow works, but not that a physical meter cannot be tampered with. Connecting secure hardware and real interval meters is the next step.
