"Bringing simplicity to the blockchain — store, update, and interact with data on Base with ease."

Why are you participating for Based Africa?

Participating in events like Based Africa offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the evolving blockchain ecosystem, especially in regions like Africa where blockchain technology has the potential to make a significant impact. Here are some reasons why involvement in such events can be meaningful:

  1. Empowering Local Communities
Blockchain and decentralized finance (DeFi) can provide greater financial inclusion, especially in regions where traditional banking infrastructure is limited. By participating in Based Africa, there’s a chance to support and empower local communities to adopt blockchain solutions that solve real-world challenges.
  2. Showcasing the Power of Blockchain
Hackathons like Based Africa are a great platform to demonstrate the practical use cases of blockchain technology. It’s an opportunity to show how blockchain can be used beyond cryptocurrencies—like providing transparency in supply chains, creating secure identity systems, or enabling new ways of online interaction.
  3. Fostering Innovation and Collaboration
Events like Based Africa bring together developers, innovators, and entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds. Participating allows for networking with other creators, sharing ideas, and collaborating on projects that could shape the future of blockchain in Africa.
  4. Learning and Growth
Hackathons are valuable for learning new skills and tools. By engaging in these events, participants can deepen their knowledge of blockchain development, smart contract programming, and decentralized application (dApp) creation. It’s a hands-on way to stay updated with the latest in blockchain technology, including emerging platforms like Base.
  5. Contributing to a Growing Ecosystem
Africa is becoming a hotspot for blockchain innovation, with increasing interest in cryptocurrency and digital solutions. Being part of this wave means contributing to a tech ecosystem that’s evolving rapidly and holds promise for the future.

What challenges are you focusing on?

Financial Inclusion & Access to DeFi
Challenge: A significant portion of Africa's population remains unbanked or underbanked, making access to financial services limited.
Focus: Developing decentralized finance (DeFi) applications that can provide basic financial services like savings, lending, and remittances. Solutions that are mobile-friendly and integrate with local payment systems could make it easier for users to access these services, even without a traditional bank account.
2. Identity and Digital Verification
Challenge: Many people in Africa lack formal identification, which limits their access to services like banking, healthcare, and education.
Focus: Creating decentralized identity solutions that use blockchain for secure identity verification. This could include self-sovereign identity (SSI) systems where users control their own data and can prove their identity without relying on centralized entities. These solutions could help individuals access essential services while ensuring privacy and security.
3. Transparent Supply Chains for Agriculture
Challenge: Agriculture is a key economic sector in many African countries, but supply chains often suffer from inefficiencies, lack of transparency, and information asymmetry.
Focus: Building a blockchain-based supply chain tracking system that allows farmers, suppliers, and consumers to trace products from farm to table. This can ensure better pricing for farmers, reduce fraud, and provide consumers with information about the origin of their food. It could also integrate smart contracts for automating payments based on supply chain events.
4. Cross-Border Payments and Remittances
Challenge: High transaction fees and delays often plague cross-border payments and remittances, which are crucial for many African families.
Focus: Leveraging blockchain technology to build a remittance platform that allows for low-cost, instant cross-border transactions. This would involve using stablecoins or local cryptocurrencies

How does your submission address this challenge?

1.Decentralized Savings and Lending Platform
Problem: Many individuals in Africa do not have access to traditional savings accounts or credit services. This limits their ability to save securely or obtain loans for personal or business needs.
Solution: The project includes a smart contract that enables users to deposit stablecoins (or other digital assets) into a savings pool directly from their mobile wallets. These deposits earn interest over time, creating an incentive for users to save. The platform also allows users to borrow against their deposits, offering a decentralized alternative to traditional loans.
Impact: This enables users to save and earn yield without needing a traditional bank account, thus promoting financial inclusion. The lending feature allows small businesses and individuals to access credit more easily, which can help in expanding economic activities.
2. Cross-Border Remittance Solution
Problem: Cross-border remittances are a lifeline for many families but are often burdened with high fees and slow processing times through traditional banks and remittance services.
Solution: The DeFi app facilitates low-cost, near-instant cross-border transfers using stablecoins. Users can convert their local currency into a stablecoin, send it to a recipient in another country, and the recipient can convert it back into their local currency. This is facilitated through a smart contract and can be accessed via a user-friendly frontend.
Impact: This reduces the cost and time required to send money across borders, making remittances more accessible for low-income families. It also empowers individuals to manage their own transfers, bypassing the need for intermediaries.

Challenges I ran into

Smart Contract Development and Security
Challenge: Writing secure and efficient smart contracts can be tricky. Small bugs in the code can lead to significant vulnerabilities, potentially causing loss of user funds or malicious exploitation.
Issues Faced: While developing the MessageContract or other DeFi contracts, ensuring that functions like setMessage or deposit are secure and cannot be exploited is crucial. Handling edge cases, such as preventing reentrancy attacks or ensuring proper access controls, adds to the complexity.
Solution: To address this, you may have used tools like Hardhat for testing and debugging. Writing extensive unit tests to simulate different scenarios, including edge cases, would have helped ensure the smart contract behaves as expected. Additionally, leveraging audit tools like OpenZeppelin’s library could assist in making the contracts more robust.
2. Integrating Frontend with Smart Contracts
Challenge: Connecting the React frontend to the deployed smart contracts can be challenging, especially when managing wallet connections, handling user transactions, and updating the UI based on contract events.
Issues Faced: Setting up ethers.js or web3.js to interact with the smart contract might have caused issues with reading or writing data, especially when ensuring compatibility between the contract's ABI and the deployed contract address.
Solution: This could have been tackled by carefully managing the contract ABI and ensuring that the contract address in the frontend matches the deployed address. Using async functions and handling error states properly in the UI to reflect transaction statuses would help ensure a smooth user experience.
3. Deployment to the Base Network
Challenge: Deploying smart contracts to a new network like Base involves understanding its nuances, such as different API endpoints, gas fees, and the deployment process itself.

Additional Features

  1. Multi-Language Support
Feature: Add support for multiple languages, making the app accessible to users who speak different languages across Africa.
Implementation: Use libraries like react-i18next for internationalization in React. This would allow users to switch languages within the app, providing a more inclusive experience.
Benefit: This feature can help break down language barriers, making the platform accessible to a larger audience.
  2. Integration with Mobile Payment Systems
Feature: Enable users to convert digital assets to local currencies through integration with popular mobile payment systems (e.g., M-Pesa).
Implementation: Partner with local payment service providers and use APIs that allow for seamless conversions between stablecoins and local currency, with direct deposits to mobile money wallets.
Benefit: This makes it easier for users to bridge the gap between digital assets and everyday cash transactions, expanding the practical use of the platform.
  3. User Authentication with Decentralized Identity (DID)
Feature: Implement a decentralized identity (DID) system that allows users to create a verifiable profile for accessing DeFi services.
Implementation: Use frameworks like Ceramic or SelfKey for creating self-sovereign identities. Users can store their identity data on the blockchain and use it to verify their identity without relying on centralized systems.
Benefit: This feature improves security and privacy while allowing users to maintain control over their data. It also makes the platform more compliant with emerging decentralized KYC norms.
