The problem Memora: AI memory & wellness aid for the elderly solves

Memora addresses the growing challenges faced by elderly individuals experiencing memory loss, cognitive decline, and social isolation — issues that not only affect their quality of life but also create stress for caregivers and families.

Key Problems:

1. Memory Loss & Cognitive Decline: Seniors often forget daily tasks, medication timings, and important events, which can compromise their independence and safety.

2. Social Isolation & Loneliness: Many elderly individuals experience emotional distress due to reduced social interactions and limited engagement, negatively impacting mental health.

3. Caregiver Burden: Family members and caregivers struggle to monitor loved ones remotely and provide timely support, leading to anxiety and burnout.

How Memora Helps:

1. AI-Powered Smart Reminders: Ensures seniors never miss medications, appointments, or tasks by providing easy-to-understand, timely reminders.

2. Empathetic Chatbot: Offers conversation and mental stimulation through a friendly AI chatbot, helping reduce feelings of loneliness and boredom.

3. Memory Diary: Enables users to record precious memories, thoughts, or daily experiences — strengthening cognitive engagement and preserving their stories.

Challenges we ran into

1. Integrating GenAI Chatbot with a Simple UI:
   We wanted to make the AI chatbot accessible and easy to use for seniors, but integrating OpenAI’s API with a clean, responsive frontend (while ensuring fast responses) was tricky.
   Solution: We optimized API calls, minimized frontend complexity, and focused on a clear, readable chat interface with larger fonts and buttons suitable for elderly users.

2. Caregiver & User Sync Without Complex Backend:
   Balancing caregiver control and user autonomy—allowing caregivers to set reminders remotely—required designing a smooth data flow.
   Solution: We implemented Firebase to handle real-time database sync, authentication, and communication between user and caregiver dashboards with minimal backend configuration.

3. Accessibility & Usability for Elderly Users:
   Our core audience (elderly individuals) often face challenges like reduced vision, hearing, or tech unfamiliarity. Designing an interface that is both accessible and engaging was a hurdle.
   Solution: We adopted accessibility-first design — using large fonts, clear icons, simple navigation, and voice interaction (optional) to make the app intuitive.

4. Deploying and Testing Across Devices (Replit Constraints):
   Working within Replit's limitations (since we used it for rapid prototyping) posed challenges with deployment speed and cross-device responsiveness.
   Solution: We optimized assets, reduced heavy dependencies, and continuously tested the web app on multiple devices and browsers to ensure stable performance.

5. Team Coordination & Task Division Under Deadline:
   With multiple features and a short timeline, balancing task division and integration was tough.
   Solution: We used GitHub Projects and daily check-ins to stay aligned, divide tasks (frontend, backend, AI integration), and merge efficiently.
