The problem MediSync solves
MediSync addresses the critical problem of fragmented, inconsistent, and unsecured medical records. In the Philippines and many developing regions, patients’ health data is scattered across incompatible systems—or worse, still stored on paper. This leads to repeated tests, misdiagnoses, delays in care, and high vulnerability to data breaches, as seen in the 2023 PhilHealth hack.
MediSync solves this by creating a patient-owned, blockchain-verified medical record platform. It enables secure, tamper-proof data anchoring, encrypted off-chain storage, smart contract-based access control, and AI-driven summarization. Unlike traditional EMRs, MediSync is built for interoperability, transparency, and patient control—empowering individuals and making healthcare more connected and reliable. Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges we faced was ensuring security and privacy while handling sensitive medical data in a decentralized environment. Storing health records directly on-chain was out of the question due to cost, privacy risks, and compliance issues. To overcome this, we designed a hybrid architecture that stores encrypted files off-chain on IPFS, with SHA-256 hashes anchored on Base for tamper-proof verification. This allowed us to maintain data integrity without compromising user privacy.
Another major obstacle was building a smart contract-based permission system that supports granular, role-based access. Managing trustless access between patients, doctors, and emergency responders required careful design to avoid overexposure of sensitive data. We iterated multiple times to get the logic right, ensuring that only authorized parties can view or write to a patient's record—using smart contracts and wallet signatures as gatekeepers.
