The problem med safe saline solves
Just to let everyone know we are students for class 9 and we study in India
The Problem: Dangerous Complications in IV Therapy
-
Risk of Air Embolism: When a saline bottle runs dry, air can enter the IV line, leading to air embolisms. Even small air bubbles can block blood flow, potentially causing heart attacks, strokes, or respiratory failure.
-
Backflow of Blood: If IV fluid runs out and isn't quickly addressed, blood can flow back into the line, raising infection risks and line clotting. This can lead to sepsis—a severe infection response causing 11 million deaths globally each year, often due to hospital-acquired infections from IV lines.
-
Overworked Healthcare Staff: Nurses frequently monitor multiple patients at once, making manual IV monitoring both time-consuming and prone to oversight. With 70% of healthcare professionals experiencing burnout, this increases the risk of human error.
The Solution: Automated Saline System
-
Automated Monitoring: A weight sensor tracks saline levels, and when it drops to a low threshold, a servo motor clamps the IV line, preventing air or blood entry.
-
Real-Time Alerts: A web app sends notifications to staff, enabling remote monitoring and reducing the need for manual checks.
The Impact:
-
Reduced Fatalities: Prevents air embolism-related heart attacks and strokes, saving lives by reducing IV-related incidents.
-
Enhanced Patient Safety: Prevents backflow, lowering infection risks and sepsis, potentially avoiding up to 30% of hospital-acquired infections.
-
Support for Healthcare Providers: Automates saline monitoring, reducing staff workload and error potential, contributing to a safer healthcare environment.
Challenges we ran into
some chalanges we faced are as follows-
- we found a chalange to calibrate the weight sensor to measure the exact value of saline
- we also found a chalange in conecting the website to device
- we fund the research for data of deaths and complication hard to find and analyze
