Guiding the Blind into a Brighter Future: Lumos - Empowering Accessible Learning
The problem Lumos solves
Navigational Challenges: Offers advanced voice navigation features, enabling seamless exploration and interaction within the application without relying on traditional visual cues.
Interactive Learning: Facilitates interactive learning experiences through tactile graphical interfaces, allowing blind students to engage with graphical elements through touch or specialized devices.
Accessibility Barrier: Breaks down accessibility barriers faced by blind students in accessing educational materials and navigating digital interfaces.
Limited Learning Resources: Provides blind students with a platform to access a wide range of educational materials, including texts, diagrams, and interactive learning modules.
Challenges we ran into
Google Policy Constraints: Due to Google's policy prohibiting autoplay of audio on new pages, we had to adapt our approach and settle for implementing a play button for audio content playback, which affected the initial user experience.
Utilizing Windows Accessibility Functions: Leveraging Windows accessibility functions for screen readers posed challenges in ensuring compatibility across different devices and operating systems while maintaining consistent user experience and accessibility standards.
Designing UX for Blind Users: Designing a user interface that is easy to interact with for blind users required careful consideration of tactile feedback, intuitive navigation paths, and clear audio cues to ensure a seamless and inclusive user experience.
Incorporating Morse Code Research: Drawing inspiration from research on Morse code communication and tactile graphics for IoT-enabled devices to support blind individuals, we integrated voice navigation and tactile feedback into Lumos to enhance usability and accessibility.
Flow Channelization: Channelizing the flow of the application to make it easy to navigate at each point and guide users through each step required extensive user testing and iterative design improvements to optimize user engagement and satisfaction.
