Weave Language into Every Word

The problem liveWords solves

Track: Open Innovation

In the realm of language acquisition, exposure to the language is a real challenge. For many language learners, the task of continuously translating every word or sentence encountered during reading or typing on digital devices proves to be overwhelming. It's crucial to highlight that many individuals face the challenge of forgetting a new language shortly after learning it, primarily because they lack consistent practice and integration into their daily conversations.
By tapping into automatic translation technology, this extension will enable users to effortlessly view translations in their target language as they read or type on the web.
This eliminates the need for manual translation, making it easier for learners to immerse themselves in the new language. With this handy tool, individuals can enhance their language skills naturally and effectively, seamlessly icorporating learning into their daily routine. The tool integrates into activities such as writing captions on social media, reading articles, or messaging friends. Users also have the option to select specific text for translation directly. The extension encourages "learning smarter, not harder" by leveraging natural language exposure and contextual learning.
Users can absorb language skills organically over time, without the need for intensive study sessions or memorization drills.

Challenges we ran into

Creating the Google extension posed a myriad of challenges, particularly for us as beginners in the realm of extension development. Initially, understanding the necessary permissions needed for the extension to function properly proved to be a formidable task. We found ourselves grappling with the complexities of permission settings and struggled to grasp the nuances of integrating these permissions seamlessly into our project. We invested time in thoroughly researching the documentation provided by Google and sought guidance from online resources and developer forums.

Moreover, the process of integrating the extension with our project presented its own set of hurdles. Sourcing and implementing the appropriate API for text translation at the backend proved to be another significant challenge. We faced difficulties in identifying a reliable and efficient API that aligned with our project requirements. The process involved extensive research, trial and error, and careful consideration of various API options available. We approached these challenges methodically, breaking down the integration process into smaller tasks and addressing each issue systematically.
