Bring Science To Life

The problem LexAR solves

Traditional textbook learning often lacks interactivity, especially when it comes to understanding complex scientific diagrams, structures, and extinct creatures that no longer exist in the real world. LexAR solves this by turning static content into interactive 3D experiences using Augmented Reality (AR).

Students can now:

  • Visualize NCERT textbook diagrams in real-time 3D.
  • Explore extinct animals like dinosaurs in real-world scale.
  • Place and study scientific models like atoms, cells, and machines directly in their environment.
  • Interact with models using simple touch gestures like zoom, rotate, and drag.

This makes learning:

  • Easier through visualization
  • Faster through interaction
  • Safer by replacing the need for real-life lab setups for basic conceptual understanding

Challenges we ran into

During the development of LexAR, we encountered several challenges:

  1. Accurate Image Recognition:

    • Problem: Some NCERT diagrams were not easily recognized by Vuforia due to low contrast or busy backgrounds.
    • Solution: We enhanced diagram contrast and used high-quality training images to improve recognition accuracy.
  2. Mid-Air Object Placement:

    • Problem: Getting models to place properly on vertical and horizontal planes was tricky using ARCore.
    • Solution: We fine-tuned plane detection thresholds and added visual indicators to guide the user.
  3. Model Optimization for Mobile:

    • Problem: Large 3D models caused frame drops and lag on lower-end Android devices.
    • Solution: We optimized the models using Blender and reduced polygon counts while preserving visual quality.
  4. User Interface for Children:

    • Problem: Designing a simple and intuitive UI for school students.
    • Solution: We tested multiple UI layouts with younger users and implemented large buttons with minimal text.

Each hurdle taught us more about AR development and mobile user experience, helping us make LexAR smoother and more reliable.
