Personalized Learning with Less Data

The problem Learning Style Identification Using SSL solves

In traditional education, a one-size-fits-all teaching method often fails to engage all students effectively. Each learner has a unique learning style — visual, auditory, reading/writing, or kinesthetic — but these preferences are rarely identified or accommodated due to time, resource, or data constraints.

Our project, Learning Style Identification Using Semi-Supervised Self-Taught Labeling, solves this by:

Automatically detecting individual learning styles using minimal labeled data, making it scalable and less dependent on expert annotations.

Reducing manual effort in analyzing student behavior and preferences.

Helping educators personalize teaching methods, improving student engagement and academic outcomes.

Supporting educational platforms to offer adaptive learning paths based on style prediction.

Enhancing e-learning platforms by tailoring content delivery for better comprehension and retention.

Challenges I ran into

🔄 Lack of Labeled Data
Since this is a semi-supervised learning project, the biggest challenge was the limited amount of labeled training data available for different learning styles.
✔️ Solution: We implemented self-taught learning techniques that allowed us to use large amounts of unlabeled data to boost the model’s performance with minimal supervision.

🧩 Choosing the Right Features
Identifying which behavioral and interaction-based features best represent learning styles was tricky.
✔️ Solution: After several iterations and research, we selected features like quiz response times, video interaction patterns, and reading frequency — which correlated well with different learning preferences.

⚖️ Class Imbalance
Some learning styles were underrepresented, causing bias in the model.
✔️ Solution: We applied data balancing techniques like SMOTE and careful validation to ensure fair representation and performance across all classes.

⚙️ Model Tuning
Finding the right balance between performance and generalizability was difficult, especially with limited labeled data.
✔️ Solution: We ran multiple experiments with different semi-supervised models (e.g., self-training, label spreading) and fine-tuned hyperparameters based on cross-validation results.
