The problem Kudawala solves
Waste generation has tremendously increased in the last decade with rapid urbanization and industrialization where it has reached a humongous figure of 62 million tonnes (MT)/year in India. Out of the total waste generated only 43 MT is collected, 11.9 MT is treated and rest of the 31 MT is simply dumped. If not now, we will very soon be left with no place to live. Hence it is important that we start becoming environmentally responsible now.
Our idea revolves around the concept of making garbage segregation at the source of the waste (the housholds) We offer a platform that connects the Garbage producers lucratively with a grabage consumer.
The target audience of our idea is every citizen. Because we strongly believe that if the waste disposal discipline is inculcated at the individual level, we can make a much bigger impact on the environment
Challenges we ran into
Though the vision of the project is to get all citizens of the nation onboard it might be practically, difficult to enforce them. So we came up with the strategy of incentivising gargabe segregation at source. Users who give us segregated waste will be rewarded with Credit Points from shopping sites like Amazon, Myntra, etc., We will also be pitching to partner with major online players to collect the Online shopping package wastes and returning it to our retail partners for recycling. This partnership is yet to be explored.
Handling wet waste is a challenging task as they are perishable and tough to manage. So we came up with a strategy of compost bin subscription to collect the perishable waste for compost bins on a regular basis.
Logistics was a major challenge - What is the frequency of waste collection? How must recyclable waste are we producing? These were few challenges that we were facing. So we came up with the idea of gathering garbage collection data (like frequency of garbage collected, type of garbage collected, areas covered, etc.,) from our app and doing predective analysis for better planning
