In summary, our participation in Base Africa is driven by our desire to leverage blockchain technology for social good, enhance our project's capabilities, and collaborate with a community of innovators dedicated to making a difference.
What challenges are you focusing on?
With Kintsugi, we are addressing the significant challenge of gender-based violence (GBV) within our community. Survivors of GBV often face numerous obstacles, such as fear of retaliation, lack of access to support services, and the risk of further harm when they report incidents. Our platform focuses on tackling these core issues by leveraging technology to ensure privacy, security, and emotional support for survivors.
Challenges we are addressing with Base
Anonymity & Privacy: GBV survivors frequently refrain from reporting incidents due to fear of exposure or retaliation. Kintsugi allows for anonymous reporting using zero-knowledge proofs and blockchain encryption, ensuring that survivors can safely report incidents without compromising their identity.
Tamperproof Evidence Collection: A major hurdle in pursuing justice for GBV cases is the loss or tampering of evidence. Our platform’s ICP blockchain integration guarantees that all data, including incident reports and evidence, is stored immutably, creating a secure and reliable source for future legal actions.
Access to Support & Resources: Many survivors struggle to find relevant and timely support. With our AI-powered chatbot and peer-to-peer support groups, survivors can access emotional support, critical resources, and connect with others who have experienced similar situations. This fosters a sense of community and helps survivors feel less isolated during their recovery.
Decentralized Governance: By integrating decentralized governance models, we empower users to participate in the management of support groups, ensuring that these spaces remain safe and community-driven, without interference from any central authority.
Through the combined use of Base and blockchain technologies, Kintsugi is breaking down barriers for GBV survivors, ensuring that they have the tools, resources, and support necessary to heal and seek justice.
How does your submission address this challenge?
Our submission, Kintsugi, directly addresses the critical challenge of supporting gender-based violence (GBV) survivors by providing them with a secure, decentralized platform. At the core of our platform are privacy, anonymity, and support for survivors, empowering them to report incidents, find resources, and connect with others in a safe environment.
Anonymous Reporting: Survivors can file incident reports without fear of exposure, thanks to zero-knowledge proofs and blockchain encryption. This ensures that sensitive information is kept confidential, while the immutable nature of the ICP blockchain makes the data tamper-proof, providing reliable evidence for future legal proceedings.
Supportive Chatbot: The platform includes an AI-driven chatbot, offering personalized responses, guidance, and essential GBV resources, which helps users navigate the recovery process based on their specific needs.
Peer-to-Peer Support Groups: The newly introduced peer-to-peer feature creates a space for survivors to connect with others who share similar experiences. The decentralized structure of these groups allows for community-led governance, ensuring privacy and autonomy for the users, with no single entity controlling the conversations.
Potential Impact
By combining blockchain technology with peer-to-peer support, Kintsugi not only empowers survivors with the tools to safely report incidents and connect with communities but also provides a trustworthy platform that ensures data integrity and privacy. This can significantly improve survivors’ access to justice, emotional support, and community, contributing to long-term recovery and systemic change.
Challenges we ran into
Challenges We Ran Into
Throughout the development of Kintsugi, we encountered both technical and non-technical challenges.
Technical Challenges
One major technical hurdle was integrating a secure and anonymous reporting system using zero-knowledge proofs and ensuring the data was safely encrypted on the ICP blockchain. Overcoming this required thorough research and testing to achieve a balance between privacy and usability.
We also faced difficulties connecting the front-end and back-end canisters for seamless data exchange. This was resolved by refining our codebase and ensuring that the data flow between canisters was properly synchronized.
Non-Technical Challenges
On the non-technical side, one challenge was ensuring that the platform was user-friendly for a diverse audience of GBV survivors, many of whom might not be familiar with technology. To overcome this, we conducted multiple rounds of user feedback sessions and made UI adjustments to enhance simplicity and accessibility.
Additionally, implementing peer-to-peer support groups with decentralized governance introduced complexities in managing group dynamics while maintaining privacy. We tackled this by introducing blockchain-based voting mechanisms and designing privacy-focused messaging, allowing survivors to maintain control over their interactions without compromising security.
Additional Features
During the Buildathon, we introduced a peer-to-peer support feature to enhance community connection among GBV survivors. This new feature allows survivors to join support groups based on shared experiences, location, or language. Each group operates under a decentralized governance model, where members can vote on group dynamics, such as adding new members, through blockchain-based voting mechanisms. The messaging within the groups is privacy-focused and encrypted, ensuring that no central authority controls the conversations. This addition fosters a stronger sense of community and mutual support, empowering survivors to connect with others in a secure and decentralized environment.
