JalNethra
Every drop saved today is a harvest for tomorrow.
The problem JalNethra solves
Problem:
-
India pumps approximately 250 cubic meters of groundwater every second, enough to fill 10 Olympic swimming pools every minute.
-
Over 60% of India's districts are experiencing groundwater stress, largely due to over-irrigation
-
More than 80% of India's groundwater is used for agriculture, often without knowing the crop's actual needs or anticipated rainfall.
-
Poor monitoring and leakages from taps at the village level waste thousands of liters daily.
-
If this continues, India could face a 50% demand-supply gap for water by 2030.
Jal Netra's Features:
Farmer Dashboard:
-
Acts as a personal water advisor, using inputs like pressure, humidity, temperature, and soil moisture.
-
Informs farmers exactly when to irrigate, how much water to use, and what crop to grow at a particular time.
-
Uses a single AI model with three pipelines: "when to irrigate," "how much to irrigate," and "which crop to grow," to reduce cost and minimize API queries.
-
Sends SMS alerts for irrigation timings and water quantities, ensuring those without smartphones stay informed.
-
The app supports offline backup and provides a multilingual interface, switching between Hindi and English.
Panchayat Dashboard:
-
Functions as a village-level groundwater monitoring system.
-
Aggregates data from all farms and detects leakages in wells or pipelines.
-
Identifies unusual water usage and generates reports for fair and sustainable water distribution.
-
Allows Panchayats to track overall consumption, spot early issues, and send automated alerts to farmers during over-usage.
Technology and Cost:
Sensors used:
-
HCSR04 for groundwater levels.
-
BME280 for temperature, pressure, and humidity.
-
Capacitive soil moisture sensor for soil moisture calculation.
-
YFS201 for detecting leaks in water sources like taps, sumps, and wells.
Tech Stack:
Firebase for data storage.
Fast API for the back end of the AI models.
GraphQL for the regular back end and routing.
ReactJS for the Panchayat web dashboard.
React Native for the farmer dashboard.
Arduino IDE for coding between the ESP32 and the sensors.
Impact:
Widespread adoption of Jal Netra can help reduce over-irrigation by up to 25%, saving millions of liters of groundwater every season.
A small pilot across 100 farms can preserve over 30 million liters of water. We would like end of on saying every drop of water saved today is a harvest for tomorrow
